i have a 92 toy pickup with a 3.0 v6. i just had a valve job and the heads cleaned. now the motor is making a knoking sound i think one of the rod is hiting the block. i want to buy a new motor but dont know where to get one or witch one. i have been thinking of the 3.4 in the newer trucks. will that fit my truck? where can i get one? if anyone can help me that would be great. thanks a lot!!!! email me at seanmaloney85@yahoo.com

hey sean,
Im in the same situation you are, kind of. i have a '94 with the 3VZE 3.0 V6, only mine is broken and yours is not. im planning on doing the swap over to the 5VZFE 3.4 V6 (found in tacos, 4runners, t100s, and V6 tundras) once i find a donor vehicle.

Check out www.offroadsolutions.com they have a bunch of info on the swap and even sell a complete (minus the engine and accessories) kit to do the swap for something like $1500 or so.

to try to answer your question, this is basically what i know, or think i do anyway; much of my information is second hand so may not be entirely accurate.

The block of the two engines is basically the same, so if you have a 5 speed (r150) the bellhousing will bolt right up to the 3.4; as far as i know the input shaft and clutch disc and everything are interchangable. That would probably be the best way to go (new engine + old tranny) since it will put the fron output of the tcase on the correct side. you will need to take the oilpan and sump from the 3.0 and switch them to the 3.4 as the front diff on tacos is on the opposide side of your truck's.

if you have an automatic, i have no idea as mine is a 5speed so i havent really looked into doing it with an auto. i do know, however, that you cannot take an auto 3.4 and hook it to a r150 (manual that came with the 3.0). i dont know exacty why, thats just what i have heard. maybe there is a different casting on the autos that prohibits converting to a flywheel or something.

for the most part im pretty sure you would end up using all or most of the accessories that came on the 3.4 (ps pump, alternator, engine computer, etc.). the electrical i would expect to be the biggest PITA of the whole swap, but ORS makes a custom harness for that ($500ish i think) if you have not the skill and/or patience to figure it out yourself.

You WILL need to install a 2" body lift or a custom hood with more clearance in order to clear the taller intake of the 3.4.

Im sure there are all kinds of little niggling things that i havent read about/cant remember; but then again there are always complications on projects of this magnitude. when i do mine im hoping to find a rolled or otherwise wrecked taco i can buy outright and have on-hand to tear apart as needed and use as a refrence.

Good luck and if you come up with anyting post it, id like to hear what you come up with.

The newer engine would be nice. They have "enough" power, however do you have enough money, because it won't be cheap. If you decide to stay with the 3.0 let me know, I have a good running 3.0 with only about 50K on it since the rebuild for the factory recall. It is a strong running motor. I would let it go for 300.00 if you come take it out of the rolled 89 4Runner that it is in. I have had 0 problems with that engine and was obviously sad to see the cab messed up, in such a great running Toyota. Let me know. My name is Chris @ 801-358-8914.

my shop guy says we could rebuild the 3.0 or buy a new block and put on the new heads that i have. i think a new motor would be better but not share. how long willl a rebuild last and will i get the same hp out of a new motor? if i do rebuild or buy a new motor what kind of cam should i get i want one that will give me a lot of power high and low i still have to drive the truck to school every day and to work. if any of you guys have any helpful tips for this project of mine let me know it would be great... thanks a lot.

alot depends on the quality of the rebuild, parts used and how skilled the guy who does it is. the nice thing about a rebuild is that you can install performance parts as you go to "build" the engine, but from what i understand getting that much of an increase out of a 3.0 is going to be $expensive$. If you are interested check out http://www.doaracingengines.com, they build all kinds of toyota engine stuff, but specialize in 3VZEs. they are Pricey, though.

As far as power, the 3.0 is rated somewhere around 150 hp at the crank, while the 3.4 is somewhere in the region of 190. Also, from what i have heard, the 3.4 is a much better engine all around than the 3.0, better engineered, less problems etc. but i have never dealt with a 3.4 so i cant speak from personal experience.
