This is what it looks like now. I swapped the engine and put a 22RE and W56, it was a lot of work but then again at that time I had access to a friends garage.

the rust gremlins have been busy this winter. I paid 1500$ for the truck and the carb engine was dead.
When I towed it home for some reason the truck shifted into gear a loud bang was heard. Final damage was blown up front d-shaft,cracked engine and other deep gouges around the the front shaft.

Here is another view of the cross member i made for the 82

Thanks! I put in a w56 5 speed tranny and in doing so the crossmember is moved back about 6" and it is no longer the right lenght.

And yes I know I've got to cut the U-bolts, I have too many project at the same time:p:

I'll take close up pics tommorow so you can see better. Here is a brief summary. or you can look in my previous posts...

draw the door the way you want it and leave an extra inch. then you cut the sheet metal at the extra inch line. That extra inch is then bent inward horizontally which makes a platform for the arm rest to fix onto
. Just make incisions at the corners before hand. Then I took a piece of cardboard and contoured the armrest. I then tranfered it to some aluminun sheetmetal (I used a stop sign....) then you can screw it together or rivet it like I did.

The door latch was brought down, no cutting just bend it.

I had some spare trim, the trim that contours the door frame. I wrapped it around the inner armrest and pannel.

Voila!

It took a couple of hours because it was my first and only half door I made. I took my time. I screwed up when I transfered the cardboard to the aluminum. I drew it on the wrong side, when I went to put it on it was backwards!! I had to make another piece...

The most time consuming was my window which is my 3rd one. I used sticky velcro on the first one. At the end of summer the glue dried out.
the second one flew away one october day and I was on the highway. Let me tell you it was damn cold getting home!

I then decided to make a nice window one with vynil and velcro into the clear window with snaps. It took me a week end to complete. There is a lot of stitching involved and taking measurements takes time.

Here is my soft window, I made it with my bargain 30$ sewing machine, the same one I used for the can back... Its alot of fun! ha!

The only thing I don't like about my door is that the outside door handle hinders a bit trying to reach out for a better view. I didn't want to relocate it when I made it. but i got used to it... In the winter I put a full door.

WOW i really like the window idea on that thats way cool, i will have another pair of doors to swap out when the bad weather comes but thats really sweet im going to start my half doors here soon, what do you think if i were to use sheet metal insted of your stop sighn idea? put a few beads on there and call it good?

You can use what ever you want, I used aluminum because it doesn't rust and its real easy to work with. The edges I think would rust fast... Maybe use satin sheet metal, it is already primed and seems to not rust as easyly... I only did the driver side. passengers don't need it! lol

When did you lift it? How much? Mine I think sits a little lower than yours and I have about 4" of lift.

Rescue
05-04-2004, 02:24 AM
Which truck? My 4runner, Ive lifted it just 1 " recently with shackles 6 1/2 eye to eye to make space for 37"s....Which are unavailable right now. unless I go wth swampers at 1500$ (too expensive for my taste)
A month ago there was no lift at all, just some fender trimming.

The 82, I put a 2" body, The spring lift I don't know they were there when I bought it. I think they may be even just a wee bit above stock. The bushwackers helped quite a bit I think...

Ive been asked questions about my home made can back. So here they are...

I won't give you all the details, you can do some research by yourself! It took me 2 years(on/off) on research ...

It took me about 40 hrs to complete. This includes welding, bending tubes, sewing and learning how the damn thing worked!! and most importantly taking measurements!

It cost me If I remember correctly about 350$ of materials.
That includes pipe, metal stock, snaps, vynil, rope, needles and thread, buckles, hardware, and a bargain sewing machine(30$)etc. etc.
I could of saved on snaps(different supplier) but I didn't know at the time.
I had a tonneau cover that I used for the top which was given to me, so I only bought some vynil for the sides.

Rescue
05-05-2004, 03:09 PM
side pic... The vynil stretches a bit when it is warm but its bearable and a lot cheaper than sunbrella. I was even told by a guy that make boat covers that sunbrella is not the best material for a soft top. He mentioned another marine fabric...

Hey Vynil is cheap!

Here is the inside of the beast. Also you can see my home made pull pal.

To hold the top flat I tried nylon straps like can back uses but it creates pockets for rain water to collect and stretch the material. I am using yellow rope but it still creates pockets but a lot less. I have to figure something else...

Here with the sides rolled down.

The top is held in place with snaps in the front and 2 ropes in the back. When it is rolled down it snaps all around.
The hhops are made with 3/4" sch 40 pipe and 1/4"plate. The frame rail is 1x2" rectangular tubing. Everything is bolted together so I can dissasemble it and store it in a tight space.

so you don't have any lift but 1" shackles ? What model bushwhacker flares are those ? Do you have a part # or a supplier? How involved was the fender trimming? Why do I ask so many stupid questions?

My 35" used to fit perfectly before the shackle lift. I had no lift then, I trimmed my fenders and there was no lift. Even my springs are flat...
I made these shackles about a month ago, hence the "1" and new lift" to fit 37"... I should edit my sig too.

The flares on the pick up came with them when I bought it. I have no info on that.

Lastly, I will take pics tommorow and explain how I did them. I did them differently than other peolple and in my opinion they have a cleaner look( for cops obviously) and don't get crammed full of mud.

Here are my trimmed fenders. I ran 2 years with 35" and no lift. there was no rubbing what so ever...

I drew a line where I wanted my fenders to be and removed the plastic inner fender.

Instead of doing like most fender trimming ( cutting at the marked line). I cut perpendicular strips up to the marked line. I then bent them inwards just like my half door. This gives you some material to to screw an inner fender if you like.

Sorry about the crappy pic but it was just too big. Any way thats what I mean but cutting strips.

The next step I removed the wires, ECU, Fuse panel in the cab where they meet the firewall. I proceeded wit a sledge hammer and bashed in the lower part of the fire wall. I gained another 2-3 inch of clearance. This is not for the faint of heart!!
I caulked the wrinkles.

While I was at it I relocated the ECU for deep water crossings

Again I used carboard for a template and tranfered it to some aluminum sheet metal. This time I used some flashing used for roofs. This is really thin material but it doesn't have to be that strong. Well it depends...lol
I got it from the construction site where I work. Hey it was free!

I screwed it in place and put a bead of caulking...

If these 3 pics are too explicit I will remove them :read: Here are the results with some trimming, with 35" and NO LIFT!

As for the rear fenders, I did about the same but there is more work involved. I cut with a grinder as far as the top of the fender and put anther piece of sheet metal..

inches i mean

The front 2 1/2"- 3" plus another 2-3 inches of firewall hammering Lets just say that my fire wall/fender starts exactly at the door body mount.

As for the rear same as the front 2 1/2"- 3". The rear I measured from the top of the well of the tub. wait ill get a picture, Ive got a hard time explaining. Don't look at the rusted holes! I have to do those soon.

looks similar to what we did on my zuk - only we cut a big corner out of floorpan and fenderwell. Do you think some 33" radials would fit without bashing the floor in?

They will fit if you trim the fenders and without the hammering but there will be some tire rubbing with the wheels cramped while flexing. ha! Going straight no problem. One thing I would do though is to flaten the rib on the firewall in the wheel well. a real nice tire slicer!

here is the rear...
