spend alot of time on the computer, resurch(sp), ask Q, and then ask youreself if you can build it cheaper youreself, and if someone local can doo the same thing. for instance, i got the spring specs on allpros springs (width, thickness, how many in a pack) and then had a local shop build them . another instance, i printed pictures off of allpro's website of their tube bed kit on a truck, took it to the local welding shop and they built the whole bed(cut ,bend fit, and weld) for $500. .... and last BUY A FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL ! it will pay for itself FAST. mine has payed for itself probable 4 times over now on axle rebuilds and motor work.

Where can I get an FSM, I really need one, I'm knee deep into an axel rebuild now and could really use the specs and diagrams in there. I'm guessing e-bay, any other not so hit or miss palces?

I see 'em on ebay all the time. You can get one on CD for about $20 or the paper version for about $80

You lost me with that one. Your avitar looks like a Dana 30, 35, 44 rear skid. Is that a Toy 8" skid and did you make it?

"the words ..toyota ...cheap... dont go hand n hand"
Then I said/typed ..........."when compaired to a YJ .... you reeeely look dumb"
What it ment is .......... when compaired to building a YJ (wrangler) a toyota is very cheap, as the axles are better and the transfer case is better (easier) to upgrade
The avitar is a "custom made skid plate for a toy axle......

Dont be such a cheap fawk....
build it right or not at all..........
Cross over is the main part of a GOOD truck.......
Build your truck in stages.......
Regear (5:29's) and get lockers
Do a 2" body lift (4Crawler)
Bash in the firewall and trim the fenders to run 33's
Get sliders and good bumpers
Then save all your dimes and quaters......... and ....... get real suspension so then you will need
Cross-over steering cause the stock will bind
New drive shafts.... long slip in front (or square) and rear CV
New shocks
Longer brake lines
...... and a bunch of other stuff
........ its only the last part thats expensive

I got a complete sky-manufacturing crossover steering setup shipped to my door for $413.99
I bought it from www.roadlessgear.com
It think the price went up it's $430 now.
I have problems with the pitman arm scraping the spring under flex but I have no bump stops I may goto a different pitman arm or a flat arm.

Relisticaly
If you buy a good truck to begin with your going to have a fun build period.
Even if you plan in building a rock crawler or a mud muncher, you dont nessisaraly have to start with a pile of crap truck.
I paid 1300 for my truck, with 126k original miles on it, has some rust in the bed and needed some interior but nothing major.
in fact even with stock suspention ive taken it out on a cupple runs and had a great time.
Being a single full time dad and being broke all the time ive found that if you get something that runs to begin with the build isnt as overwhelming cost wise...just get what you need as you go
this gives you a good opertunity to try out new things and get ideas of your own.
sure your engine will eventaly crap out depending on how *loved* it is, but even still when you go to get your rebuild or do it yourself its not like it wasnt worth it.
Even still im finding general maintance on the 22r and 22re is the cheapest of any vehicle Ive ever owned
I mean my truck is 23 years old, and it still runs like new!
Point, if your on a budget and you really wanna a toy, go slow, it is all worth it in the end, and it gives you time to change your mind as new better parts come out.
No two trucks NEED to be alike.
Just have fun :) because thats what its there for.
