I was wondering in your opinion cost and effectiveness if buying a newer truck with IFS and SASing it is better than buying a truck that already has a solid axle??

85xtracab ----I would figure you being up in Connecticut that the IFS version would suffice just fine....you can probably run up to 33" tires with very little problem....especially if you keep the tire width to about 10.50".

not that my truck is working out all that great but that is b/c of time and money.

BUT A 3RD GENSAS IS BY FAR THE BEST. modern styling and all the benfits listed above. and a truck that isn't a hundred years old and beat to crap is easy to find if yo go with a 94. i would always go ifs and sas but only if the truck was efi otherrwise it would be a waste. going with a 91-up eliminates that issue.

hey all my stuff in my 85 works just fine, now A/C I can't speak about. 85' Toys have more creature comforts then some of the new domestics i've seen. Woot for Toyota.

I would suggest going solid axel from the start unless you like big projects and have lot of friends that can help fabricate. I knew no one and didn't do any myself so I needed SFA from the start. Don't pay a shop to SAS, only do and SAS if you can do it yourself. Then you know your truck inside and out, because YOU BUILT IT.

To answer your questions... Yes I know its just a site... Yes, I do have to make comments about everything... No, I never said it was a crime... Plus it was a joke anyway... obviously a touchy subject

Back to the subject... ;)

Really depends on your budget and your end goals...

If you did get the 85 (an older) do you plan to add the wider IFS rear, do the steering box mod? Add EFI if needed. If you answered yes, to all, then in the end it is going to be cheaper to pony up for the SAS swap on the newer truck, rather than adding all that to the older truck...

A hub-to-hub mini axle sells for around ~ $150-250, add another $1000 worth of hangers, springs, steering and you could have the SAS done, take note your rear springs will need to be lifted to match the front, so add another $400-600 for springs/shackles...

If all you want is a cheap wheeling rig and aren't going to convert to fuel injection, or go with the wider IFS rear end or high steer then I would find an already solid axle truck. If you want to do a lot of those mods then I would get a newer truck and do the SAS. Then you could build it exactly how you want it, and have all the reliablity and creature comforts of a newer truck. If you don't have the time, money, or fabrication skills to do it yourself I would buy a truck with a solid axle from the start.

Well put, $$$ and your skills are really going to be the limiting factor. An EFI 85' isn't impossible to find, and a EFI swap into an earlier truck isn't that hard either (PM 1/4 Eliptic about the swap)... But if a HD rig is your end desire, go with the late model and get the torch out.... :D

I would agree with the others, stick to the new and swap the IFS out. These days with so many kits out there, it is easy to do. And like the others have pointed out, the benefits to a newer ride are:

1). IFS steering box for Hy steer already in place
2). Wider rear axle already there
3). Creature comforts
4). Newer look and styling
5). Larger brakes
6). And, you will have something very special about your rig then.

I dont know why I posted this, everyone has already said this in the posts above....Just thought I would summarize!

Good luck
