I bought an 85 pickup about a year ago and we havent had a chance to drive it very much because we are still workin on it.....im just a kid soo money is a little tight......we were out for a drive before it went under the knife again and around turns the tires were chirping....we werent driving fast either and it seemed like it wanted to fish tail and go more straight then anything else....
we bought this truck from and older man who knows how many people owned it before and it was all stock when we got it.....is it common for people to just throw lockers in trucks like this?? and is there an easy way to find out if there is a locker without having to pull the 3rd member off????

A somewhat primitive way of finding out if it has a locker, lift one side of the axle, so that side's tire is off the ground, then give her some juice and see if the other tire contacting the ground moves. Try it in a ditch or something where you can get the back end of camber. If it's chirping around corners, its either a spool or a full detroit or something to that matter.

Or jack one rear tire off the ground and try to turn it ....... simple :boing
If the tires are chirping, you either have a locker or you're in 4wd.

woah...i dunno why theyre tellin you to jack one tire off the ground and give it gas?? youll run off the jack and possibly ruin something....best bet is to jack the whole rear end up and with your hand spin one of the rear tires....if its locked both will spin the same direction...or an easier way is to just find a gravel road or someplace with loose ground and spin youre tires a few times....see what kind of response you get. i got a spool in my rear end...makes the truck somewhat tough to turn with the wheel cranked to one side on pavement.

Jack up the rear end, Spin one of the tires, if only one moves it's open, if they both move or if you hear a ratchet it's locked.

if it's chirping it doesn't mean you have a locker. You can have welded or spooled diff. Listen for the ratcheting. IF not there's a good chance it's lincon locked.
