Ok, here goes. I hve an 86 Runner with a 22re. I have that rattle (clatter) that is spoken of so often and figure timing chain.
Well first let me say the motor has somewhere between 150-200,000 miles on. I have had it a year and a half with just basic maintenance. It uses about a quart of oil every month and half or so and runs good, no smoking or leaks etc...
The oil pressure runs to the low end of the gauge at an idle but comes up center while driving.
so I took it to a mechanic and he confirms the timing chain, but also had it compression tested. It is running mid 150's on compression. The mechanic says there is a fair amount of blow by occuring however.
So iknow how to turn a wrench to a point put even with the instructions, the timing chain is a daunting challenge. Th e mechanic estimates 10 hours labor at a rate of 45 dollars per hour...OUCH!
Plus I want to replace the oil pump while it is being done.
What I need are opinions on this motor first and second, anyone in the phoenix area know where i could get this done cheaper, or better yet want to come and work with me on it so i can learn, and i will pay them as well?(hopefully for alot less than 450 dollars) By the way, I will of course get the parts from engine bldr as is so often suggested here.:Help:

Hunter...You know, it really isnt that big of a daunting task to do the timing chain by yourself. Dont pay to much heed to the Chilton, Haynes, of Toyota Factory Repair manuals, they make this job look terribly difficult by removing the manifolds and head. I have done this job numerous times, the trick is to pull the timing chain cover without removing the oil pan and the head. Here is a good step by step instructions at the following site.

When buying your timing chain kit, spend the extra money your saving from the mechanic and invest in metal backed chain guides, and a good quality timing chain kit. AVOID your local auto part store kits, they are crap and the chain is usually pretty cheap. I have read many threads on this site where these inferior chains lasted about 20k miles. Try www.22re.com or www.doaracing.com for some great timing kits.

Good Luck:Rockonman

The more i think about that money the more i know i can tackle this, i am getting the engine builder kit w a new oil pump and probably a water pump while i am in there.

What are y'alls feelings about the compression and the blow by? anything to worry about?
compression in the mid 150's with moderate blow by and the sharply fluctuating oil pressure, normal in a yoat?:Help:

Hunter.....I would think that high amounts of blow-by would suggest the pressure ring is shot.....but your compression is 150 psi...that's a good number.

Let me re-phrase that.....your compression is 150 which suggests that your valve seal and rings are in good shape which suggests your blow-by should be minimal.

Also, do the TC job yourself.....I like the idea of dropping the oil pan.....that makes getting the TC cover off a snap....also is a good time to think about new rod bearings.
