So here is the deal. i just went and looked at an '88 4runner 4x4, V6, 5 speed, 270k, power everything and all the luxo BS, and auto locking hubs. The body is in excellent shape, the interior is almost as clean as my '94, it will need tires probably before winter.

The issues i have with this truck are: The mileage, 270k is alot, even for a toyota; and There is an engine oil leak, located near the head gasket at the very rear corner of the engine on the passenge side.

I have the VIN and i am going to call the Toyota dealership tomorow to see if this engine falls under the 3VZE head gasket recall and if it has been serviced for that yet. I am also going to go back and look at the truck again this weekend and see if the owner will let me do compression tests on the engine.

He is asking $3000 for it, which i think is a little high, i was thinking of offering him somewhere in the area of $2000, maybe a little more or less depending on the V6 recall status and the results of the compression test.

What do you guys think would be a fair amount to offer this guy for this 'runner? I plan to use it mostly to commute to work and general purpose light-duty 'wheeling. I May do a SAS later on, but that would be a couple years off.
Thanks!

Don't know what they're goin for in sunny CA but I gave $2000 for my 86 with 220k on the ticker, 22RE, body and interior in good shape, and I felt like I made out pretty good. Just my .02

Here in the mid-Atlantic area it would be in the $1500-1800 range.

My '88 V6 had the same oil leak, new valve cover gaskets fixed it. My truck had already been in for the head gasket recall. If the truck is as clean as you say, he will get 3 grand for it.

I think you are right core shot...he will get 3K for it, if he wants to wait for the right buyer. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 2K for it, but than again I am pretty stickler. I would say just stick with your original idea of offering 2K.

So i bought the 4runner this last saturday, got it smogged and registered (screw California!). it needs some work, but nothing real major, mostly just tune up related stuff. ill probably go thought and change out all the wheel bearings, seals, and suspension bushings, hoses, fuel filter etc.. all the standard major tune up parts, just so i dont have any suprises, but i think for the most part its a pretty solid truck. I paid the guy 2200 for it. Im happy with the deal, except that its red, but i think i can live with that. Thanks for all the input, i appreticate it!
