ok, i have an 85 with a 22r with a manual tranny. it is in need of a rebuild or i'm thinking of trying to find one from a yard. first off, what type of tranny is it? and what yota tranny, manual, has the lowest first gear ratio? i see some of y'all have a W56, could someone give me a rundown on that? thanks for the help.
Maybe this will help http://www.marlincrawler.com/trans.html

Unless you can find one with real low mileage at a yard (which is unlikely), I'd rebuild. A high mileage used tranny won't be any better than the one you have, more than likely.

Just my .02
Don't go to Aamco, They've had my Dodge in there 3 times since they rebuilt it in Feb and they'll do anything they can to empty your wallet. When I rebuild the tranny in my 4Runner I'm sending it to Marlin.

so whats the difference in the G52 which is what i seem to have and the W56?
dood save ur self the money and time and buy one off wildyoats. if u get one at a yard u have no clue whats up with it.
if u rebuild plan on throwing money down the toilet. just to replace synchros ( they make it pop out of gear and such) is like 800 bux if u have someone else do it.
i went threw one tranny and i bought another for 200 bux plus then u get a spare t-case and if ur lucky u can find a topshift and get dual t-case or maybe even find one out of a rollover with some 4.7 gears.
DO NOT REBUILD WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY

The rebuilt trannys on Marlin's site seem pretty reasonably priced to me.
marlins are better then any others also check out marlins used section. lots of trannys in there

tranny's from the turbos have the lowest 1st gear and are 23spline, its not too much$ to upgrade your t-case to23spline too

Atillia is correct.. I went through the transmission bullshit awhile back with my truck.. Since mine is an 80 pickup it had the L-43 Sideloader 4spd which i stripped the reverse idler gear out of it trying to back out on a rockpile.
I got lucky enough to find a W-56 out of a 85efi truck with t-case for $150.
I did the swap and am I ever glad I did. It was a little work but since i do everything myself it was not that bad. The front D-shaft has to be lengthened 4 1/2" which really helps with higher suspension lifts.. and the rear driveshaft had to be shortened the same amount. the crossmember had to be relocated of course and the tranny tunnel had to be cut a bit which only takes about 10 minutes with a Milkwaukee Sawzall and torch blades :D
If you are going to keep the G-52 which is a step down from the W-56 then order the rebuild kit from marlin, dont think twice about it and get a GOOD tranny shop top redo it for you. If you lived close by i would tell you to bring it on over and we would shoot the shit while i press the new bearings in and swap the synchros.
Anyways something to think about.
