There was an ad in the Seattle PI Classifieds (Thursday March 18th) for a 78 FJ55 for $2500. I was wondering what to look for in the 55's (Problem Traits and Good Traits) and maybe if I should trade him my truck if its a good deal. I love the 55's and wanted one for a while, but they are hard to find, and now I have a chance, what do you all think? Also, I know they are 'sprung under', how hard is it to do a spring over conversion and what do I need to do as far as steering and what not? or is it as simple as unbolting everything and just rebolting it to the top of the axle?

Thanks guys,

Ian

they are very rare which makes them cool but they are very rare which makes it hard to find parts, but at the same time as far as running gear goes they use the same stuff as the 40's do so that makes it easier to find parts. spring over is not just a bolt on thing it takes a lot of work, so i have been told, i havent done one yet but plan on it this summer so i will be able to tell you more while i am going through it, but their is a million sites with step by step spring over write ups so i hope to benefit from others knowledge when i do mine. the number one problem is going to be rust but if you dont mind battling it i say go for it cruisers are awsome, thats why i own 3

I don’t want hijack your post but I also am looking at a 79 FJ-55, it is some what rusty but only has 81,000 (it’s been used as a hunting truck on his ranch) original miles on it, it has been in the seller’s family sense new. He wants $800.00 for it. I have a couple questions. Is the drive train the same as the FJ40 or just the axles? How reliable are they? Any basic info would help me make a decision. Thanks Craig
