this is how i am going to strenghten the inside. except i am goign to use angle iron.

and the door handle will be on the top.

there is going to be a big map pocket inside as well.

got some more progress done today.

welding sheet metal with a 120 amp flug core mig sucks! i'm going to buy some 18 gage and angle iron to finish the rest up next time i have a chance. i am also going to old school and gas weld the sheet metal.

some more pictures.

i forgot about cup holders. that sucks. i guess i'll just drill a hole with a hole saw and make the cup holders.

looks good. I've edited a few things:

I will give a hint that will make things a lot simpler and stronger than stock when building half doors.

1 Draw your door the way you want it then give it an extra inch all around and draw it also.
2 cut the door at the one inch mark.
3 where there are intersections, cut from the one inch line to the first line you have drawn. Also some cuts where the sheet metal curves
4 bend all the sheet metal inward 90 degrees from the first line that you have drawn( extra inch)
5 using card board draw and cut the arm rest.
6 You now have a solid place where you can rivet or screw your arm rest to the door.
7. from card board template cut a sheet metal arm rest and install.

For the inside I trimmed the existing panel to match the line and used a spare trim piece from the door and contoured the armrest sheet metal and panel.

I relocated the latch futher down and bent the rod a bit to fit the new location.

i thought about bending over the sheet metal idea after i started welding. unfortunatly it was to late. it would definatly make welding it together much easier.

i am using 2 inch wide angle iron. its 1/4 inch thick. really heavy.

Why half doors instead of no doors?

I like having the arm rest and the feeling that I'm not about to "fall out"

but with no doors you can hang your foot out the door (on the road) and get that nice breeze to cool your boys off on a hot day
it helps reduce the chaf************e

i made my doors removable last year. but my wife would probably freak out without a door when we go four wheeling. i don't mind not having any doors. as long as nothing falls out.:D

Here it against the law to ride without doors! jeeps are ok because they are made like that !! I find that stupid... Any way a half door for me is just to get a better view when I rock crawl.

In the winter I just replace my half door with the original one. It takes about 20 minutes to replace.
