I used reciever hitch tubing (2-1/2 in and 2in--1/4 wall) ground the yoke's down square till they fit tight in the tubing and welded them up.I didn't put any zerks, just greased it up well slid it together and bolted it in.
I get vibe's at around 45-50,it isn't a big deal for me at least...

its not exactly a long travel, but I got a IFS drive shaft and took the cardan joint (or whatever its called) off of it. The IFS barrell was longer than the one on my stock 81's. I just cut the IFS barrell to the desired fit and welded my 81's joint back on.
The only parts of the IFS shaft I used was the barrell and splines.
Wasnt to expensive, and works for my application.

Here is one that I made recently for one of my samurai friends.
I also added the grease fittings but who knows how long before they get ripped off. If you pack it very good with grease you should be ok for awhile. all you have to do is take off one end and slide it apart, regrease and bolt it back on.

Geez, I need to get some shafts built. Would any good DS place have long travel slip splines handy or would I need to get one from Marlin? Also, about how much should I expect to pay for a DS shop to build a slip spline in and blance the shaft?

ive gone through 2 of them so far. there cheap but they don't last. The vibratiing wasnt bad since you should only be crawling but mine have always been noisy for some reason
id suggest just going to pick n pull and getting one. thats my plans for tomarrow morning... !@#$%^&!

Well in my area toyota 4x4's are VERY rare to find at the wreckers.. It's tough getting parts around here. When a truck does arrive at the yard it gets raped FAST..

You have a larger piece of square tube that has a smaller piece that slides in and out, the whole piece of square tube is the slip.
On another note, I honestly haven't had a problem with my stock length slip. I run all pro springs up front, and made my driveshaft myself. Just cut it on the main tube and added a smaller od .220 wall piece and welded it in there. Its not round really but it doesn't vibe on me till like 35 mph!

It sounds really fun to make your own and all, but I was quoted $125 to have it done with full size tube by a driveline shop that's been around for years. By the time you buy parts and put in time you may as well put in the overtime at work and have it done right. pm me if you want info on the shop it's in ogden on 12th street
can you run these in a dd ? If so any run one ?

i have an farm implement style shaft on my runna.my stock shaft would pull apart 4 inches when flexed about 90 percent.
i just went to a farm supply place and ask what they had for making pto shaft material.he pointed me to a bin with probably 30 bits and pieces of both inner and out shaft material.
when i found what ineeded he cut off 2 pieces i believe were 16 inches long and i threw him 20 bucks and went to my buddys machine shop.
i removed the old thinwall ubing from the shaft and cleaned up both ends so he could turn them in a lathe.
all in all it cost me about 30 bucks for the tubing and my buddy to line and straighten them in a lathe.it would be more if i couldnt do some of the work myself im sure.
the tubing is like 3/16 wall and can easily support the weight of the truck and not bend at all

OK what I have found out is IFS front shafts have longer slip joints, and solid axles have more movement in the double cardan joint. Measure the length from T-case to diff at full extension and full compression. Take an IFS slip joint and '85 and older DCJ and your measurements to a driveshaft shop. I had my made at Englewood Custom Driveshafts for about $160. Works great and have not had problems with vibrations although I have only gotton my 4Runner up to 75mph with 33's. Also the plugs on the u-joint side of the slip joint pop out all the time. I had a small weld put in place to hold the plug in. The plus to this is plug doesn't come out and let dirt get in. Downside is plug is intended to come out if driveshaft is compressed too much to protect T-case from damage. I have not had problems with this yet.
