View Full Version : Hy Steer, YES or NO???

If you have read any of my previouse post I'm planning on lifting and gearing my new 85' Runner soon. I'm gona go with All Pro's 4" springs and 5150 shocks all around. I know alot of ppl. don't go Hy-steer and just upgrade their drag link or pitman arm. Is this something I could do to help save the $500 that Hy-steer would run me, or would I just be better off going fro broke and getting the hy-steer? Also which company makes a better system or are the equal. All Pro, Marlin Crawler, or Sky Engineering???
Thanks in advance,
-Scott

I'd definitely say bite the bullet and go cross-over. It steers much better on a lifted vehicle, no bumpsteer, and much beefier.
If you intend on doing a u-bolt flip up front, the stock steering has to go anyway.
Who's you use is a toss-up. Mine's AP, but that's because it was on sale at the time.

The Marlin Crawler unit is made by Sky Manufactoring if I understand it right.

Hysteer isn't a total neccessity but it's nice with everything up that high. You do definitely want to switch to crossover steer though. That can be done cheap, I think it's in the cheap trick section on this site:D That's how I did mine originally to save $. Then I bought a marlink tie rod (bent it anyway:p ) then a year or so later bought allpro hysteer arms when they went on sale (had to shorten the marlink a little:( )-Then after awhile I ordered draglink with the endthing so it bolts direct to a stock pitman arm from sky. So now I got good hysteer setup with a little bit of stuff from everybody, didn't seem as expensive over time like that:yes:

Thanks guys, I figured I would need it eventually, but I guess it's just better to get it over with and go big. That takes a nice $500 chunck out of my budget, guess sliders are gona have to wait, I'll just be careful until summer time comes and I can work 40hrs again.

Go ahead it is definetly worth it. After I lifted mine I had a dropped drag link and it was a little scary to drive (with the bumpsteer). I didn't realize how scary it really was until one day when I pulled up in my driveway and, while sitting there I turned the wheel alittle bit and it felt funny. When I got out and looked the J arm had broke in half. I am glad that I wasn't driving on the highway.

Yes I also broke the J arm going over a speed bump in a parking lot, pretty embarrasing to do a trail fix in a P Lot

you can build your hysteer for much less then $500.
go to the bone yard and pick up a ifs steering box. $100
get an fj60 draglink and tierod. $35 (then cut and tap to fit)
hysteer arms $150-250?
atf fluid $5
total= $390
and some scrap plate to plate the frame where you are going to put your box.
i got my hysteer arms for free. back when there used to be a drawing on the PBB. so mine was pretty cheap
heres what i used

I would love to make my own, but I have no fab skills whatsoever and I really would get lost in the venture I would think. A kit despite the cost I feel might still be my best bet. I don't undersand steering enough, and it's to important to make that my first "fab from the junk yard" job. Does anyone know of a write-up that might make it easier or is it still over me skill level.
Thanks for the tip on the FS Kit, wish me luck.

i didn't know jack about steering until i got in there and built my system. its not really that hard. i even set my alignment with my tape measure.
but fab skills are required i agree. because you are going to need to plate your frame and drill holes to mount your new steering box.

Ya, you can do this, but it is MUCH easier not to half ass it, and have a bunch of problems come up. Also, by the time you cut and tap the drag link and tie rod, you will be close to the cost of just buying a kit.
It took me 5 trips to the fab shop, and 9 hours of work to re-do the steering setup on my daily driver. I put marlins kit on my 4runner, and it was nearly perfect (ok, he gave me the wrong jam nuts, but they were on my door step 18 hours later).
Plus, now I have 3 different sized jam nuts, and 3 different brand tie rod ends on my daily driver.... and in the end, I think I saved about $20.
With the low cost of machining right now, it just isnt worth it to make your own.
