I saw one in a magazine and figured I could make it myself so here is what I did.

I took a peice of heavy gauge steel square tubing 2"x2"x3' and drilled a 3/4" hole about 2" from one end. I welded in a peice of scrap 3/4"rod through the hole to make it so I could hook my winch hook to it. I then notched it on the top and bottom so the hook could get to the rod. then I turned it so the rod was level with the ground or horizontal and again drilled 4ea. 3/4" hole in it at an angel towards the end with the rod.

I then torched out the holes to fit some pipe I had that would allow the 3/4" steel rod or rebar to slide through it. then I welded the 1"pipe x3" long pipe into the holes as a pass through for the rebar. I then cut 3' sections of rebar and welded some hooks on the ends so I could pull them out of the ground with the winch by pulling my truck directly over it once I was unstuck and hooking my cable to it.

to finish this thing up I spray painted it with some cheap paint and called it finished. just some scap metal pipe and rods. oh yeah one of those folding chair bags works really well for a carrying bag I just put it all inside the bag and sinch it closed.

one thing when you weld on the hooks weld them on the sides of the rebar at the end leaving enough room on the end for mushrooming since you will be hamering these things into the ground. I drop my 3lb sledge in there too and strap it to my spare carrier in the bed to hold it in place while wheeling.

I'm looking at making a pull pal replica soon to go with it since once I got stuck in the sand and it was useless.

I know this isn't great but here is kind of what it looks like so you can get an idea. just remeber to put enough angle on the rods. and when you get stuk with out a tree to winch too if there is any solid ground you can drive this thing in and hook up and winch out. it isn't perfect but it works really well and stores pretty easily too. and if you had the right size tubing you could amke it fit inside itself and put caps on it say with a 4" tubingwith the same pipes though it it would leave enough room inside for the rods to fit inside. you could make it out of round pipe as well I just used what I had. I made the hooks for the end of the rods out of some 3" pipe and just cut 1/2"wide sections and pounded them into an oval shape to have more welding surface.

it was really easy to make and I dont't see why you would have to have a welder to make it you could just skip the pipe going through it and drill the 3/4" holes at an angle and leave it at that.
and use a grade 8 3/4"bolt with a locking nut for the hook end

you drive the four rods down through the tubing into the ground and it becomes a gr8 anchor then once your free you hook you cable to the top of each rod and pull it out of the ground via the winch. or better yet put a hook in the center of the tubing and pull all four at once.:D

Looks like it might be easier to use than mine. I always hated the time it took to bury my spare deep enough to winch. Hehehe ;)
