Any body got any knowledge of the factory auto tranny on an 88 4 runner, Japanese version and stateside version have different motors but I'm hoping the tranny is the same model Aisin 30 80,
I've r/r'd mine three times now and had the front half broken down to the acuator also have had the manifold body out of the front pan.... I was looking for some insight as to why I lost reverse??

yeah there was a sticker on top of it that said 340 but unfortunately with the clean as you go process that got washed off  the model # I listed above was off the blue plate on your passenger side of it about in the middle . we checked the auctions out here and a used one same model goes for about 50,000 yen about $475 -500 so my friend out at the shop wants to replace the clutches and such about $100 total but I`m wanting my truck back like yesterday;)

i would go for the rebuild. toyota stuff is good but a used auto is not as sure a thing as other parts.

i posted awhile back on there asking about lots of that kind of stuff. For instance they got the 18r motor series. It is the same as the 22r except with a steel head.

Oregon, we have the 3y engine which is a 2000 c.c. efi no carbs 200 c.c.'s less than your 22r once Yuji get's me through this I'll see about some pic's. Rob, I' did have the pic's of the motor and spec plates unfortunately the shop computer took a giant crappola and took the pic's with it:fuming:
hbar the 18r is 400 c.c.'s under the 22r and was probably used in the pre 85 hilux trucks but I've never seen one in a hi-lux surf ahh 4runner at least not a factory set up that motor was used for many years in the celica's and toy factory road race teams. and a very sought after motor here and in Australia/NewZealand............
:D with that we return to the original line of this thread any suggestions points and or advice???:D
and motor tranny swap is not an option to much red tape paper work time and money:rolleyes:

Oh yeah forgot to mention that the aisin web site here indicates that "an aisin transmission should never be opened"and goes on to say "not even to change the fluid":thatsfunn the Japanese are not known for having the do it your self type life style,it's more like take it to the shop or get a new one.....these people confuse me sometimes:D

Well I got fed up waiting for parts and went out scrappin....
turns out there are no trannies to be had in mainland Japan scrap yards.
But wait yer gonna love this every yard I went to asked what I needed and before I could even finish sayin I need a 1988 Hi lux auto transmission the room would go quiet and the people would look as though I said something really really bad  at one yard a guy actually started to giggle til we made eye contact and he realized it wasn't a very good idea :angryfire
so I'm back to waitin for parts, they have to be shipped from Nagoya prefecture Toyota city home of Toyota:rolleyes: .
Problem is it's the new year season and basically everyone is off for a week straight(no parts) and it takes a week to order/ship :Freak:

Well fellas witha little mod the diesel tranny will work how ever not needed :no no: on mine .
Yuji and I cypherd our way through a break down and rebuild of the a/t broke it down to parade rest .
heres what we found right before the transfer case is the reverse clutch and some how the snap ring that holds it together pushed out of its groove leaving me with no reverse and some really funky shifts up/down:rolleyes: in other words reverse weren`t engaging :Help: after an inspection of all plates witha micro meterand testing all actuators for full movement according to the Aisin book (See above replies)everything was within acceptable limits. So the afore mentioned snap ring was the culprit:Freak:
Long story short the rig is up I`ve gained a bit of knowledge that I hope may help others as a/t over hauls and a/t work in general is pretty expensive,by the way this little three month tour of agravation only cost me $100.00:yes: vise $500.00 to $1000.00 for an O/H by a pro shop.
Yes Rob I took the plunge and was successful:Rockonman
Thanks to all you Yoaters out there in Yoat land for your inputs and what not..Think I`ll go fer a drive :bye:
