View Full Version : Tacoma gearing question
I want to run 33's on my '01 3.4 v6 Taco. Ive heard some say that you need to regear for 33's but im in college so i cant afford to regear it right now. Its stock right now but im planning to go about 3 inches on it and run 32s or 33s. Id like to run 33s but since regearing is out of the question i dont want to kill my gas mileage. Any advice would be greeatly appreciated.

For a 3" lift I'd run 32's and for that I wouldn't worry about regearing. I think for 33's a 4 to 5 inch lift is best. Just my .02

If it's an auto it should handle the 33s no problem (no clutch to burn up:eek: ) If it's a manual, I wouldn't go larger than 32s, even then your offroading will require alot of clutch slippage to get you over any decent size obstacles. I guess it really comes down to the kind of wheeling you plan on doing........Hans

I run 32's with stock gearing in my 3.4 5 speed..... fast and still has power.. lost a little bit out of the hole, but gained some top end. I prefer to keep it out of the rocks (I have a crusier for that) so I never notice the big tires there...
I have a customer with 35's and stock gearing, that does feel very sluggish out of the hole and I think he loses alot of top end as well...
Just my .02 cents... :D
Im not sure of the gearing but can i run 33s with my stock gears? I need to keep that decent mpg.

seems like people always regret going smaller on tire size. and 33's are a lot easier to buy/sell/replace. i am confident it will drive fine, but you probably will lose a little mpg.

I would GUESS if your truck came stock with 265/70R16 you have 4.10's. If it came with 225/75R15 you have 3.90's. I'm sure ratio is determined by other factors but this could be a quick and easy way to tell. I believe the transmission the truck came with is the deciding factor. My brother's '98 TRD with an auto trans and stock 31" tires came with 3.91s.......Hans

What is the "B" code on the sticker inside your door jam? Look for something like BO3A or BO6A.
This will tell ya what gears came stock. :D
First digit:
A = 7.5" ring gear (front)
B = 8" ring gear (rear)
Next two digits: 01 = 3:42
02 = 3:58
03 = 4:10
04 = 4:56
05 = 3:15
06 = 3:91
Last digit:
A = 2 Pinion, Open
B = 4 Pinion, Open
C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
