how to measure a new drive shaft??

how do you measure a new front drive shaft? my friend has a 94 4runner and a custom solid toyota axle, the only thing left to do is to install a new front drive shaft. so what is the correct way to measure it?

measure flange to flange and also flange to flnage when the diff side is compressed. u dont wanna bottom out. then fill the rest of the tube with spline ;)
