is there a good article or a thread that show how to do this. most of the stuff i see doesnt answer the questions i have. i know most of the stuff is straight plug in but what about the tach thats my big question. my truck doesnt appear to have the pigtail that it will plug into. if someone can point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

It is all plug in. Unscrew your existing non-SR5 cluster, and unplug all the pigtails from the back of the cluster. Then each pigtail should plug right up to a female end on the SR5 cluster. Everything should be there to plug in, was on mine. Remember that you will need to switch over your idiot light oil pressure sending unti to a bigger sending unit from an SR5 in order to send oil pressure readings to your cluster. This is on the side of the engine. However, note that there were two different oil pressure sending units made for SR5s. I got the wrong one and have yet to get the right one. I can't tell which one I have so I'm going to buy both from Toyota, try both and return one. They're pricey though at like $40. Hope this helps some!

Oh and there should be pigtail for the tach, can't remember right, but I think it was previously unused on the non-SR5. And just needs to be used now. No need to wire up anything special.

i disagree, there is need to rig up something special, but only if you have the cheap harness in your truck, which is possible if you plugged in the cluster and the tac didn't work. my friend did this to his truck, and what you have to do is find the coil in your engine compartment, and there is a single green plug hanging from where the wires come out of the coil. you have to run a wire from that plug up to your guage cluster , and run it into a specific spot. but when doign this you have to be careful not to let the wire plugged into the coil ground out, or you will blow it up , and you could get hurt. not to mention the things are over 150 bucks used. but i forget what spot you have to run it to. i know there are three connectors that plug into your cluster, and i want to say that it is number seven hole on the widest connector. but i wouldn't hold me to it, its been a while. but if you look at where the plug goes into on the old cluster, you will be able to see by the groove made by the connectors in the plug that there is one empty slot without a wire connected into it. you have to put the wire to that plug by putting one of the spring loaded clipper things on the wire and putting it into the backside of the plug. here is a picture.
