Heres an odd one i have never seen on any forum, i have an 86 runner sr5 5 speed w/ a 22re motor. Any time the upper motor gets wet, from water crossing to just cleaning it up, the rpms will not go past 2000. you can drive it and it runs fine as long as you stay under 2000. at 2000 + it cuts out, drops back to 2000 and runs normal. this lasts hours, i am assuming until what ever it is dries out and then all is fine. obviously water is getting somewhere that it should not... but where and what should i check?

I had a similar deal on my 88 after checking what I thought was everything I found that water had gotten into the wiring connector on the throttle body because the rubber boot was old and raggedy dried it out and applied silicon grease and re connected it then did the rest of the conectors the same way and by the way I wash my motor after every run, mud every where:D no probs yet (almost 2 years now)
also you might want to check your intake/air filter box for water as well;)

I had that problem after i powerwashed my engine once, all it took was some carb cleaner down the intake to clear it up, you might wana check your distributor also just incase.

I had a 94 chevy Z71 and it had that same problem when it was under load. It ended up bieng a coil wire grounding out. An easy way to check is to get a spray bottle and fill it with warm water and lots of salt, let the salt dissolve and mist it by the wires while someone revs it up. If it is a wire arcking you will see a blue spark where it is. good luck

You also want to check your throttle position transmitter, mine had a very small crack in it. If I went thru water hard enough to splash water up to the top of the engine or sprayed the engine down to clean it, it woulndn't rev or run worth a shit.....if that's your problem get a used one....new they are around $280....I think I paid $65 including shipping.
