The exhuast on my 83 pick-up snapped in half. It snapped before the CAT but after where the header bolts on. It had already been welded in the same spot before and I want to weld it again but it wasnt a very clean break and there is a significant gap between the 2 pipes. I was thinking of welding some metal over the 2 pipes... Any suggestions???

If it was already welded there and it broke again, its going to break again unless you fix the reason it broke again........
Find a cheap exhaust repair place and see what they say....

Go to autozone, find some tube either the same size as the pipe and butt-weld it... or go one size up, slide it over the two pipes as a sleeve, and weld it that way.
While you're at Autozone, buy a couple of exahust hangers... the exahust is obviously under-supported, putting too much stress on that pipe. It'll keep tearing right next to wherever you weld, because the heat anneals the metal near the weld, softening the steel.

check out the bracket that bolts to the bellhousing and clamps to the exhaust. if the engine/trans has been seperated recently and if those years have that bracket? i am not sure on that:( but that is easy to bolt on wrong and put a strain on the exhaust. as was stated if there is a stress on it it will break.

the header pipe broke. mine broke a while ago. my friend that was a toyota tech said the exhaust mounts loosen on the tranny and then it breaks.
