I pulled my head on my 85 22re to install a brand new head. Just for background there was nothing wrong with the head that was on there but the gasket had started to leek and i also have a 4runner that needs a head so i figured i would get a brand new head and performance cam to install on my truck while i was in there doing the gasket then take the old head(which is still good with low miles) and install in on the runner. Well to get to the point i pulled the head and found all the cylinders have a gritty texture. Its like a black, rough sandpaper all on the top of the piston. if you rub on it it starts to come off and is like a bunch of metal chips... Is this bad? what is going on? What should i do? Also before i pulled the head there always seemed to be a kinda oily in the #4 cylider, what do you think caused this? Help please! I need to get the other head on tommorow More background.. All cylinders had 175 pounds of compression give or take 5-6 lbs...

Any help is appretiated and thatk you in advance

Have you checked your cylinder walls for visible scoring yet?
if not just rotate it by hand and do so,if they arent bad i.e. still shiny and the compression is still good so I'd go ahead and keep with the install after cleaning the pistons up a bit.
the black in top as long as it's not fried on sounds pretty much normal try cleaning them with kerosene, apply and let soak for 10~30 mins then wipe out(no abrasives).
I'm not familiar with the positioning of the 22 series engine does it sit slightly tilted back if so and you don't drive very often could be the reason the #4 has oil in it or the rings but that cant be it because you said the compression is good right?
hope that helps get you through.

Later;)
oh ya and before install of the old head to the 4 runner check it for cracks preferablly by getting it bead blasted at a shop just because you mentioned something like metal shavings on the pistons clean clean clean thats the way to go:D

yup I concur....get that old head as clean as possible before you put it on the other truck and inspect all valves ..valve guides and clearances.....also here is a nice link for toyota manuals for the 4 runner
