I recently purchased a Power Tank 10. I love it so far. It inflates my tires from 10 to 30 p.s.i. in under a minute. It also runs my power tools and can re-seat a bead. The tank lasts about 38 minutes. It costs me about $12 at a local fire service shop to fill it.
I would recommend it aside from the cost. It set me back about $445 all together. The site is www.PowerTank.com.

if anyone can find one you can also use an old coke co2 bottle and buy a high flow regulator from a welding shop or from power tank ($200) which comes with a regulator, handle, hose, and a air chuck. i found an old tank at a yard sale for $20.

Also works great to run ARB's as well. I will never run a compressor setup after using a PT. by far the best setup with more than one use. I even take in the wifes car on long road trips

Hey!

since I purchased a Lincoln 170 MIG when I built the truck, the 20lb CO2 tank and regulator do double duty as my trail air source. Cost on purchasing the tank was $120.00, the Regulator was about the same, some quick disconect fittings and 50' air line were another $35.00 or so. I use a standard tank mounting bracket bolted to my tool box w/ a chain around the valve stem w/ lock to prevent it from being lifted out. I've found that, at least in my area, the Medical Gas supply stores are the cheapest refill source @ $12.00 + tax to refill my tank.

Hi all.
About making your own tank, Be sure to check the date on them, They need to be tested every 5 years on the steel tanks unsure about the alum. It would suck to buy a tank that wont work!
Just a thought.
I built one, had it tested and filled for $25.00 plus all the other goods, cost only depends on what you want to have.
I do have an extra, But it needs to be tested, Its a 20lbs Coke tank, Bevco. said they cant fill them or wont?!? If you want to give it a try, Email me, I live in SLC, I dont think I can ship it.
Good luck

the aluminum tanks also need to be tested every five years. i had a tank that was expired and praxair gust swaped me for one of their tanks and just charged for the contents. what kind of tank do you have is it steel or aluminum and how much do you want for it.

Greetings. First post here and I saw the Power Tank post.

Great little unit. I have had mine for awhile now, and use it for airing back up the tires after a run, and for checking my tires once a month at home.

I also use it to run my impact wrench when switching over to my winter tires.

I have a write-up on it here. (http://www.pnw4runners.net/tando/power_tank.htm)

I got mine from the Pepsi guy, with the Regulator and all the crap I have about $130.00 into it. I have the 20LB one. I got a deal set up with Genral Air in Colorado Springs the 20Lbs cost me only $8.00 to get refilled. Look to see if you have one in your town. I tell everyone to use the Wildyoats account. It is a win win for everyone.

Yes you do, I can get the 10 lbs for the same price of $8.00, that is as low as they will go. I would call around. One other thing, if you have to leave your bottle (if it is a true Power Tank) so they can ship it off to get filled stay away...I know a few people who have had problems getting theres back, plus the get all scratched up.

Thanks.
Yes, the place I go now they fill it up while I wait there.
They aren't shipping off my shiny black bottle for someone else to have.

Mine is the black one that PT came out with awhile back.

But I am going to see if there is a cheaper place.

i dont know about you guys, but shortly i will be running an 88 cubic foot scuba tank. it holds 3000 psi, and i can get the reg for about 65, not to mention i fill them for free

Corey
12-27-2002, 10:26 PM
From what I have read, that's like a time bomb waiting to blow.
Even with that volume, it's not near the Power Tank.
The PT will fill 40 tires aired down to 15 and back up to 30 again.

If the regulator gets knocked off the PT, it won't become a missle.
A scuba tank can kill if the reg gets knocked off.

Yeah- the scuba tanks are dangerous. Liquid co2 is inert and won't explode. And like Corey said the liquid will give you more air time with less tank size.

i work with HPA all day long at my job, i am the airsmith. I also do a lot of work with CO2. the problem with CO2 is that it is a liquid. Have any of you used your powertank below about 30°? it is stored 70% liquid, 30% gas. In cold weather, the tank will draw out the gas at first, cooling the tank. once the tank is cold, it will try to draw out liquid, and if it does this, it will put liquid into your tires. the problem then comes when driving. as the tires heat up, the liquid will turn to gas, more than trippling the pressure in the tires. the compressed air willnot do this. and if it is warm out, and you knock the reg off of a powertank, you dont think that thing will go flying? I have personally seen a tank blow up. it was an 89 pound bulk tank. the reg broke off and the tank went flying at about 50mph and flew pretty far, and no whrere near straight. it went everywhere. After my job, i trust the air more than i trust the CO2. but it is true that the powertank will give you more time with less bottle, but, air tools were not ment to be run on CO2. they were meant for air. and if you do use your tools with a powertank, make sure that after you do, you oil the tool, and run it with air to clean it out. I am not knocking the powertank, i think that they are great, but for what i would use a tank for, especially here in northern illinois, i would rather use compressed air.

That is true about it being cold out, But as far as the tires heating up...I dont know about that. I have been told that by someone who works with CO2 also. So I started to check my tire pressure all the time after i started to use CO2, and I have used it for 2 years. TO date My Tire pressure as never doubled or Trippled. It has not even got 10lbs greater than when I started!! I have even Aired up when it was 23deg out side....and it still did not go up in pressure after being heated up.

I also heard that CO2 will eat away at your tires.......Still have rubber on there too!!

Just my .02 cents! From someone who uses it all the time.

I check my tires about every three weeks to make sure I have around 35 PSI in them, as that is what I run.

It's always right on or just a bit below which is normal since tires are porous and will lose a little air over time.

And I have not used a service stations compressor or my own air comp at home in over two years now.

You might say my tires contain pure CO2, and the pressure has never doubled or trippled.
And I have filled them up below freezing before.

I run two sets of Wild Country TXRs sized at 31x10.5x15.
One set for winter, one for spring thru fall.

The winter tires on there now are from spring of '99, and the CO2 has not hurt them a bit, or my other set.

notice i said IF liquid gets in your tires. with the volume of a powertank it will take a while. and they run an anti siphon tube. this will keep liquid out, untill the mesh starts being eaten away. i dont think the powertank has been out long enough for any of these to do this, but it can happen. i am by no means trying to badmouth the powertank, i am just a fan of compressed air. cleaner, and no side effects.

I have a York compressor set up to run air. It cost $250 or so for all the parts, it'll fill 36's from 10-30 in ~1min and it'll keep pumpin or runnin air tools all day long-no paying to have tanks filled it works great

I would personally prefer the compressed air tank too. Just mount the tank somewhere safe, and if you are that worried about getting the reg knocked off weld a cage or exo skeleton for the tank hehe. Anyway I have found used scuba tanks the 88cu I think but they run only 100 or so. Then I have a paintball fill station for my paintball hpa tank and I could just hook a hose up to that. As soon as I can afford it, (and knock all my other first things on the list off) I will be doing this.......

Ya, I'm cheap.

I'm planning on just using my Scuba Cylinder, spare 1st stage regulator and with 3000PSI behind it, I'll be good to go :D

Oh, fillups are only about $5

There's 1 little side effect to comp. air...it's 3300psi compared to CO2's 800-1200psi. That's more than double the psi in the same type of tank, plus the CO2 is mostly a liquid which won't expand as rapidly as the comp. air if they were to blow. I'm from Florida and have dived most of my life and I can tell you that any experienced diver knows those tanks are serious bombs waiting to go off. There have been numerous people killed by scuba tanks exploding while filling and even moving and dropping them. It's not always just the valve getting knocked off, somtimes the valve just strips the threads and shoots off like a cannon without any reason or warning. Of course, a CO2 tank can kill you too but it's alot safer than a scuba tank.

Oh, and for the record, I've never had my tires change more than a couple psi with CO2.
