Greets to All -

I need to replace my knock sensor of my 3.0 V6 and was wondering if anyone knew of a good web page that goes thru this or some good tips on how to get the job done correctly...any help appreciated...thx

"crickets chirping" wow the response on this thread is staggering he he...whew sure wish someone had done a writeup on this...guess you all have had better luck than I when it comes to the knock sensor.

Is this on a 4cyl?

I had some problems with mine, but it turned out that when I switched blocks in my old 4runner I didn't screw the sensor in tight enough, and eventually it worked it's way a little loose, and then there was trouble.. I think it threw a knock sensor code and it retarded (i think) my timing to the point I could barely drive.

I don't think it is that tough of a job. Unplug the sensor, unscrew it, screw in new one, make sure it is pretty tight and plug it back in. I can't think of any other steps to take. Maybe clear out your codes (pull efi fuse for 30 sec)...

Thx Led, but I can only wish it was a 4 cyl...its a 3.0 V6 and the sensor is buried in the middle of the engine, I have to take both the upper and lower intake manifolds off just to get to it....not a good design imo.

The right side valve cover isn't much better, or the PCV valve. Lots of buried stuff on the 3.0

:D What leads you to the knock sensor? Have you done tests?? Don't always believe the codes are right. My V6 knocks/pings on occasion. Never set a code. Code # would be helpful. MORE INFO needed. Later...

Oh geeze, I need to pay closer attention, I didn't even see the 3.0 part in the first post. Doh! Hahahah.. see the mistakes that happen when you try to post and work at the same time.. :D

What type of info do you need 4xFred? I have already checked the ignition timing and some other items to see if it was something basic..ths code is - '52' I even took it to the yota dealer and had them run a diagnostic on it ( they said I needed a new knock sensor also ) but they wanted way to much money to do it even with a discount I could get because I know someone who works there.

:D I'm unhappy for you. I looked in my FSM, Alldata...every info. source that I have access to & NOT ONE has any info/tests on the KNK circuit. All I can give you is a redneck test. It's worked for me in the past. Here goes...run the truck till it's almost on empty, put $5 worth of the cheapest gas you can find in it. Now, Hook up your timing light & advance the timing at least 10 degrees. Get a helper, have them powerbrake the truck(SAFETY IS #1 HERE) & you watch the timing light/marks & see if the ECU trys to pull timing out/back. You should hear the detonation in the motor during this test. You should see the timing try to "back up" if the ECU is doing it's job. Hope this all makes sense. IF not, E-mail or PM me & I'll try to explain better. Later...

It does 4xFred thx...I wish I had a dyno he he...I noticed that to on all the technical books I looked at the data info on the knock sensor is sketchy at best...you would think such an important item would have more info on it...sigh....the symptom I am getting know is that if I start the truck and leave it at an idle the light will not come on but after I drive it for about 30 sec the light will come on and I can actually feel the timing retard and the truck starts pinging.....does this sound like a knock circuit symptom to you? The light will not go out after it comes on but sometimes when I start from a signal light the timing will advance correctly then.....retard again ..its off again on again type of symptom.
