I was just curious if it was legal to drive with no doors on my toyota pickup in Southern California? I'm headed 4xin this weekend and want to take them off but I have a 2 hr drive to get to Gorman and don't want to get a ticket just getting there. Thanks for the help.

I think you might need a driver side mirror, I not 100% sure. I have driven around without doors all the the time but its so uncommen whare I live, I don't think the cops even know if it is legal or not

I drive by D.PS. and cops all the time with no doors. So I don't think it's illegal. I know you need to have at least 2 mirrors and wear your seat-belt.

It varies from state to state, call your local DMV or highway patrol.
In Utah you must have 2 of the three mirrors, either the driver and the w/s mirror or the drivers and the passanger, drivers side mirror is a must. If your doors are off you must mount them to them some where else.

Here in CA, slap on some side view mirrors and your good to go...
here in illinois, all you have to have is either the two outside mirrors, or just the middle rearview.

Hey Kurt? Can you have the windshield mounted mirror and the passenger side mirror? or does the driver side have to be included?

If you have the w/s mirror and the drivers side mirror, then you are OK... or the pass and dirvers side mirror.... either way you must have the drivers side mirror. Check with the DMV to make sure this is still the current law.

I was ready to argue with the cops around here if I got pulled over for no doors with "why can the jeeps get away with it?" I learned that it's because the have "tubed" bodies. So I believe you have to have something going 3" up where the doors would be and driver side mirror and rear view mirror. Passenger side mirror isn't as important. I rather run my half doors anyways!
Obviously you're still going to stick out in a crowd so you would want to start off being legal every where else. Wearing a seat belt can always help because you might look more responsible and like you're at least trying to be a "good kid"! Other states might not be as bad, but that might give you an idea at what they look for...

Well I just smashed up my passenger side door while wheeling in redington (tucson, az) and so today I took my doors off. I have no mirrors except for the rear-view. I did a lot of driving today without them and I love it. Just wouldnt want to get hit or roll it. I drove by a lot of cops today and didnt get hassled. If one does though I wonder what the penalty is...I can't afford another ticket (in more ways than one)

I called the local police a week or so ago, and they told me in utah as long as you have at least the driver side mirror and the rearview or the driver side and passenger side mirror you are ok. I also asked them if you were required to have somthing coming up to keep stuff from coming out, and you don't but I would prefer it rather than losing a cell fone or sumthing.

Having no doors sure is a conversational piece isnt it? I get a lot of people talking to me at stop lights, waving, and just grinning. I cant believe how many people talk to me at the stop lights though, it's fun.

Just make sure your girlfriend's dad doesn't see you without doors...some people may remember my story.

Travota what's your story? I have no idea.
I had to take mine back off today. Too damn hot here in Dallas. Funny for me to say that coming from Phoenix, but humidity SUCKS!!!! I love it with them off. It is like a convertable but without the sunburn on your head!

Texas only requires 1 mirror looking to the rear, windshield or driver side.

Where have you guys mounted your mirriors with the doors off? I have an 83 and the mirriors are on the doors. I believe it is the same for all yotas.

I mount my mirror to one of the bolts that holds my fender on. I had to drill a hole in my mirror base but it works.

was just looking at all of the post and thought that i would add this so that all of you will be better informed.
Right now how it is stated in the utah safety handbook put out by the UTAH STATE HIGHWAY PATROL for the use in safety inspection are as follow: reject a vehicle when:(a) Doors or door parts are missing, broken, or sagging so that the door can not be tightly closed.(b) dorr latches do not fuction. The reason behide this is so that you dont have rocks from the road coming inside of the vehicle. And on the jeeps, yes evan though that the doors are not designed to take a hit they still have to be there.
note, half doors do not fall into this, they are still considered doors.
now on the side mirriors here is the law on them:1. from the driver's position, check the exterior mirror(s) for a clear and reasonable unobstructed view to the rear. reject a vehicle when, It is not equipped with the required mirror(s). On the left side on all vehicles, manufactured after january 1968, one on each side of vehicle when tinting is present. rear view mirror must be present if windows are not tinted. Hopes this clears things up. If you have any other question let me know.
