I ws just wondering who makes some good gears. I want to get 5.29's in the rear of my 83 toy. If I do 5.29 in the rear what do I do in the front? thanks.

go to randy's ring and pinion if you want good gears, or go to yukon gear directly
www.randysringandpinion.com
www.yukongear.com
you'll have to do 5.29's front and rear

what he said! little bit more, but worth it!

and as he also said... you'll have to regear both axles at once... or not use 4whl drive untell you do both...

Yup, definitely the Yukon's. We use them in all of our rigs and recommend them to all customers. Stay far away from Genuine, no matter how good a deal they may be...

Warentee's wont get you off the trail.......

unless they were given to you. in that case then that's the ONLY exception.....

I run the Sierra Gears in my landcruiser and know of at least of dozen others as well, no problems. I know a few people with them in their mini-diffs and they all seem satisfied as well. nothing but bad news about Genuines... run!

What it boils down to is people post Sh*t about things they have no experience or knowledge of. Everyone told me that 5.71's are too weak. So far I have yet to brake them even though they are Genuine's which a lot of people say suck. Unless you have experience with them how would you know? Because you saw a post about one guy breaking them doesn't mean you should go around and post that this product, etc. isn't any good. Now if you posted that you had Genuine's and they broke more than once, then you would be able to justify your post. I broke my stock Toyota 4.10 gears, now should I post that they suck and are weak? Anyways all I am saying is they are holding up just fine. And in the event they do break they won't cost me another $150 for a new set. All they will cost is BlackTop talking Sh*t!:D So I will continue to use Genuine's until I can justify another brand.

kinda seems like no one knows anything:)
every truck is different and everyone wheels different and that doesn't even include 4runners:)
now jeeps are a different story we all know no matter what they say they all break everything:D

easy there.... we not here to rip on jeeps... just gears....! I wheeled with a good friend that had 4WhlPt specials (genuine) and he swore by them and then he got into more difficult stuff and the rear blew on one trail. taking more then 6 hours to get him off and to a trailer to get him home... well got the the rear fixed and had the front looked at. seemed good! well the next weekend the front gave way and there we were again... few more hours on the trail. Not as bad cause he could still drive home on his own..... but still.... From that day on and after researching those gears, I will not put them in my rig ever...... The only reason I went with Youkon is after all that reasearch I did, and the feed back that they got... Like now in this post! it pays to look stuff up... Now I know a few stories of people that do run Genuine and others and had great luck with them.... so that can be traced down to who set them up..... WHOLE nother story in itself... that's why I still wont setup my own gearsets....

I'm not trying to defend myself or one company, but rather give my impression on this specific topic......

I am currently running Precision 4:88s and I haven't had a problem yet. Hopefully later this summer I will be putting my new Yukon 5:29s in my 4Runner. :D I would suggest going with Yukon, but if that isn't a possibilty, go with Precision. I have heard a lot of negative things about Genuine, although I personally have never had any experience with them.

I am running genuine 5.29 with good luck so far. I had yukons in another truck I had with good luck. I think you just need to have them set up right. And get rid of the crush sleeve, it will work its self down and then.... bad things man! All pro sells crush sleeve eliminator for $25 well worth it. Good Luck and Wheel on!:D

What about a heavy duty crush sleeve?

AZWILDYOAT

I think you mean Solid Spacer? Yes go with a solid spacer. A new crush sleeve costs around $20 and a solid spacer is $25. So it wouldn't hurt to use one.

Using Precision, Superior, or Yukon, you'll have a good set of gears. Just make SURE they're Yukons if you order from Randy's. ZUK got a set that wouldn't set up right, and they turned out to be their crappy VALUE GEARS. They're freaking pot metal, kinda like Genuines. Sounds like this is what may have happened to mr.-illiterate up there in the orange.

Hint: I know quite a few people who work for 4 wheel parts and wheel around here. They only sell genuines, so that's what they'd get an employee discount. Sounds good, right? An employee discount on a liftime warrantied item? Only problem is, they break. Much more easily. Those guys are all running Yukon, Superior, Spicer, or Precision now. ;)

If you're perfectly honest with yourself, unless you're running hard trails frequently, you'd be fine with genuines, but it's like buying a Great Neck tool from Autozone with a lifetime warranty... if you use it hard, all day long... it's just plain easier to go Snap-On (or at least Craftsman) in the first place.

I have no idea what was wrong with Mr. Illiterate's set-up.....he may have had the Value gears....or maybe he set them up himself.... here's that link that TNT refers to where I was sent the "value set" ...... http://www.dreamwater.com/zuk/kylegearsetup.html the customer sent them to me actually. Wasn't Randys fault in this case. But it sure was an enlightening experience for me. What shiz gears. Then I received the Yukon gears and what a difference. The gear quality is hard to beat from Yukon.....but a bad set-up will make even the Yuks look like Genuines! :) I don't hardly trust anybody to do work on my rigs.....seems like nobody gives a dam.....and that's why I am so glad I have the 'nak' for settin gears.

If Yukon was so great why would they put their name on a another set of gears that suck?

Ukndit is a good friend of mine, and knows his Sh*t. I'd trust him any day to work on my truck. Here's what he said-

Just a few F-ing words about Yukon Gears- If they are so great why did it take me less than an hour to brake them on a -3.5 trail? Answer Randy's Ring and Pinion gave me- Randy's inspected the gears and refunded my money after inspecting the gears and finding cheap ass metal. But I guess that's quality for you. Genuine Gear's motto- For those of you that can't set up R&Ps, Burn it up, Tear it up, or set them up wrong and we will warranty them with no questions asked. Now that is a F-ing warranty if you ask me. What it boils down to is F Yukon, they suck!!!

I can vouch for broken Genuines... seen it first hand thats my experience... :D

As for Precision, Sierra, Yukon, etc.... so far all good comments... Of course anything can be broke... right? I'm sure someone has broke a set of Yukons... and sets of Sierra.. of course Precision.... like I said anything can be broken.

If you have run Genuines and they work fine for you, run em' again, they are undoubtedly cheaper than others and lifetime warranteed, how do you argue at that if you trust em'?

:D

what i mean is this is far from a controlled study. your not gonna determine anything except who talks the most:) or can type the best:D i have learned most of what i know by asking queations like this and then just trying it and seing what works.
but jeeps really arent cool and your parts finally shipped yotarunner, 5-15-03 only a week late and thanks for the money:)

Randy's Ring and Pinon sells "Value Gear" and Yukon Gear. If they do all the shipping, boxing, and what not... and send the right box with the wrong stuff in it... that means the gears are crap now?:p

Edit: This forums "sticking-tongue-out-smiley" needs some work. It looks like this guy is smiling  ---> :p
