I recently purchased my 85 toy and have big plans for it. Now if I just had the money:D . Any ways soon after I got it I noticed the front axle was leaking a little bit of oil here and there. Well that little bit has turned into a lot and I'm now planning on rebuilding the front axle. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips suggestions or just plain old sage advice for me before I begin. I won't be rebuilding it for at least another couple of weeks due to a lack of money, but I figure I might as well be prepared  . Thanks

hey ive got .02
i just thought i would be smart and buy my gasket kit from my work (lafontaine toyota) for 60 bucks only to find out that i would like to replace the top and bottom bearing since my axle has been sitting outside for years. well the bearings are eighty from my work or eighty from randys ring and pinion. randys sells that whole kit for like 110 so i lost 30 bucks. well i thought i was smart.
pick that kit up from randys if you want the bearings or i would sell you my kit for 70 shipped:) if you just want the seal kit

Thanks for the info It helps alot. Those were some excellent write ups, lots of good info. I was planning on buying the seal kit from All Pro. Any one know were I could find a socket for the nuts holding the rotor on. Thanks again and any more info is always welcome. :D

let me try again to prove how unsmart:D i am (and tell how to save a buck, this time succesfuly) in all these years i now own over ten grand in tools and still dont own that fn socket but use a screwdriver (the cheaper the better) and a hammer. put the screwdriver on the nut so you can hit it with the hammer and chisel the nut in a circle thereby unscrewing it. it works great. pry the tabs of the center washer over first.

I have used the screw driver method before on other cars and I don't like how damaged the nut can get from doing it over and over again. I think I'm going to try useing a socket on my toyota considering that I am positive I will be removing these nuts time and time again :D . Thanks for the tip any ways.
Is the standared socket from sears deep enough????
The Sears socket is plenty deep enough.
As far as a gasket kit with bearings, try www.heartoftexasoffroad.com
Its the gaskets AND knuckle bearings, for $75.

The hub socket for a jeep cj will work very well. Does anyone ever just not put the lock ring back on and just use the bolt and washer. I have had my toy like this and never had any trouble with it....

i think that should work fine. toyota would have done that way except then they would have to tell you to adjust your bearings every oil change or so.

Or get everything at once! Little more but when you price the inner & outter bearings and sockit, it becomes vary appealing!
