hey, i am looking at an 85 4runner, and an 89 4runner. i noticed they have different engines, but they both are 2.2 liter 4cyl. What is the diff?

Actually they are 2.4L. 22re is fuel injected, 22r has a carburetor. The 22re has like 15 more HP too.
The 85 4Runner should have the 22re. If it has a 22r, then it is a 84 not an 85.

Adam is mostly correct.
22r-carbed
22re-EFI
22ret- EFI-turbo
As far as 85 goes they put both carbed and EFI motors in. So that where adam was a bit off. 84 ONLY had carbed motors....
Toyota put carbed motors in up till 87 I think, so that 89 defently has a 22re.

I was under the impression that ALL Runners were fuel injected... at least from '85 and up, the few '84s around could have a carb I guess.

Every 84 runner I've seen was carbed, every 85 and up runner I've seen was EFI.
To answer the original question, have you actually looked at the vehicles in question? If you're going from the ad, some people may refer to the 22re as just a 22r, not knowing any better... I'd take a look-see under the hood to make sure.

but he was referring to 4Runners, NOT pickups. All 84 4Runners were carb and all 85 4Runners and up were fuel injected. So I was right :p

And my 84 extra cab has a 22RE... complete from an 84 Celica. My 84 FSM lists the procedures for the 22RE, so it was in the works or was an un-popular option... but I've never seen a factory 22RE in an 84.

Power steering was available in any year truck or 4runner, my 83 base model p/u has it, as did my 81.
85 was the 1st model year for the 22RE and available in 4runners only.
Later it was available in trucks also.
The 22R was available until 89, mostly in 2WD trucks.

"85 was the 1st model year for the 22RE and available in 4runners only.

If thats true, then why is it that my truck was made in nov of 84 as an 85 model and has a 22RE (stock)&(soild axle)?????
fourwd1 I have never heard you say something like this before, its just not like you.
Why did this get dragged back up?? Le_Roi this Thread is from 2003 bro.
