hey, i've been looking at 4runners for a while, and i have found a couple that seem promising. i have one problem though. they are the 4 cyl, 22RE, which i have heard is a good motor, but i'm wondering if it will have enough power to drive on the freeway when i am running around 35 inch tires. I know that I can gear it very low, but that takes away from it's freeway capability. I don't know much about the V6. My question for you is, should i keep looking, and hold out for a V6, or is the 4cyl adequate for rock crawling with 35's??? Thanks a ton!

It's great that you are shopping around. And to answer your question....

The V6 3.0 (IMO) is just ok.... for a v6 it lacks a lot of power for the title and weight... plus HG recalls and little issues here and there..

the 22r/re's are a vary strong reliable motor. and are easy to work on. If 35's are in the future, then regear to 4:88's or 5:29's and that would match you up good for highway travel. I run 5:29's and 37's with NO motor mods and I can cruze 65-70 fine with my 22re.

Not sure what year they started putting the 3.4L's in but that V6 is much better then the 3.0, and has more upgrade options(supercharger). If I were set on a V6 that is the only one that I'd look for...

3.4L are in T100's and Taco's.... the regular trucks only had either 3.0L and 22R/RE's

I'm not 100% sure but I think the 3.0L V6's have a chain driven T-case while the runners with the 22RE have gear driven T-cases.

Something to consider if your gonna built it up and wheel it hard.

Can't beat a gear driven T-case. Specially 4.7-1 crawler gears. Try that with the chain driven T-case.

BTW: I have a 92 3.0L 4runner and it's in the shop getting the heads gasket recall done. Bought it last friday and dropped it off for the recall saturday. Should know something by this thursday on weather or not they'll be replacing the block or just fixing the head gaskets.

I will agree with Yotarunner on the output of the first V6's. They dont necessarily impress me either. I think with the amount of aftermarket options available to the 22RE, you can easily suck the same power out of the 22re. If I recall correctly, the stock HP diff between the two was very minimal.

I run 35's on my 4runner with my 4 cylinder with 270,000 miles on it and it drives fine. I do have a header, larger exhaust, Jacobs ignition, and a cam though. I use 5th gear often on the freeway.

my .02.

Good luck!

I have both, and the 22RE is definatly the better motor of the two. And yes the 3.0 6 cyl. model will have a chain driven t-case that you will want to change out if you plan on either a gear reduction or dual case.

The 4 cyl. is a way better engine, the v6 to me, just is'nt worth the extra 30 hp, it's not that good of a design, I built my 22re with a stage 2 trd cam, ported and polished head, k&N, and some "nos", it will smoke any 3.0 liter I've encountered so far!

my dd has a brand new engine, it can't hang with this, even with the boggers!

i love toyotas love 22r hate the 3.0v6... my 22r has 160,000miles an is still going strong oil leaks an all...lol now i know you cant tell me a 3.0 will do the same....couse youll be luck if it last 50,000 miles before it throws the timeing belt...heheehehee...so id say its a better go with the 22r now if your looking at a reacent model runner or just have to have those extra 2 cyl's then swap in a much better desinged late model 3.4liter v6.....

my 92 pickup with the 3.0 has 166,000 on it and it still runs strong. throw the k&n fipk kit and 2.25" exhaust on it and its not too bad. gear driven tcase would be nice though.

my 1992 22re tossed its rod bearings at 130,000 miles, needs a new cam and has no power.

my buddies 1992 3.0 has 130,000 on it and still runs good, but has not much more power then my 22re

Yeah go for the 22re. I have a carbed 22r and have raced my friend in his 3.0 yota and we stay neck and neck. And I have a high mileage engine with no mods and have larger tires and no regearing. Stick with a 22re. Amazing little reliable engines with plenty of power and keep it lighter. No need for a pain in the a$$ 3.o that is dead weight.
