I have heard quite a few different views on where to actually put that Mar-tack spot weld. I have a stock carrier up front with a lock-right, anybody have the same set up and have the correct location to put it?

I will say that 1" is not far enough, the axle wont go in all the way....

dont mess around with guessing, just dip the splines in grease and install it all the way in then pull it back out and tac it where the grease ends. make sure to grind the tac down to match the splines so you dont mess up the inner axel seal:D

You can see were the splines have a wear pattern on them, Marlin say 1 3/8 from the end. If you messure you will see that is right around the wear pattern. I have also heard of guys "staking" the splines, If you have a welder thats the way I would do it!

Just a thought? The Martack is used to prevent the shaft from "sliding" though the carrier right? With a lock right, a cross pin is used so the martack becomes unnecessary?

Staking is where you take a cold chisel and a BFH and boger the splines up so it can't slide past that point. Tacking them is better put in a pinch staking will do.

Yeah what he said. It does work but IF you can weld it up thats the way to go.....also see below for another IDEA.

Yes but do you want the shaft to slide in and out? I would rather have it move a little bit than allot.

Here is what happened to me. The clip that prevents the Shaft from going into the Birfield (out side one) slipped off, the Shaft was slamming on the inside of the Longfield, so bad that I had to hit the hell out of it to get the shaft off. I did not have a Mar tac on it......so with it being able to slide back and forth it forced that clip to come off and PRESTO I had a problem!!!!

I would do the TAC for sure...if you cant Stake it or Use QuickSteel on it or JB Weld. Something that will harden up so you can grind it down like a weld!! :D

Just got my Longfields, Instructions say 1.5" put a tack weld then grind smooth.....I believe Marlin says 1 &3/8" or 1.5"....Stew
