Has anybody ever come across a bad timing chain tensioner? Re-did the top end on my 85' 22RE; Valve job, new timing chain, (all quality OSK parts) tensioner, guides......the works! Runs great but, here's my problem: Once it warms up, I hear what I believe is timing chain rattle. My theory: When the oil warms up and thins out some, the tensioner bleeds off pressure and allows the chain to slacken causing the rattle. BTW it only does it at idle and quiets down when you raise the RPMs up a little to raise oil pressure. And the motor has great oil pressure to begin with! I've done several timing chain replacements for friends (using the same parts) and never had a problem but, this being my own truck......... I really don't want to tear it apart again but it's driving me crazy! C'mon someone talk me out of it. There's gotta be a simple answer.:(

this may sound weird but if it is a fuel injection like you say(22re)take the rubber tube off the throttle body and get a toothbrush and carb cleaner and spray a lot of it up in their w/ the throttle open and scrub it real good and wash it w/ carb cleaner again . put it back together and when you go to start it hold the gas peddle all the way down until it starts . it will start hard but it will start and smoke and carry on but will clean out and run rite
about 800 rpms. i spent $50. at the dealership to learn that, when the throttel body gets carbond up youre idle drops and youre engine starts to make rattleing noises. hope this helps i know messing w/the timing chane sucks!

I completely cleaned the throttle body and intake runners before putting everything back together. I guess I'll just have to tear into it again.

before you tear all the way into it double check your valve clearances, but try it when the engine is warm, that is how the manual says, Ive only done mine cold and I have a simmallar rattle, I'm going to try the hot valve set as soon as I can.

Just did em at last oil change, thanks for the suggestion though. Oh, by the way you should always set your lash with the engine at opperating temp........Hans

I know I should have but I didn,t have time, needed my truck back on the road, and was working on it late in the shop at work after hours.
