View Full Version : Rubberized Undercoating in the Cab

The best thing I have yet to do is to put rubber undercoating on the floor of my cab. Its easier to clean than carpet, and cheaper than a vinyl insert. You can just hose it down and let it drain out of your plugs in the floor! My buddy did it, and he has had no trouble with it. My truck isnt open air, so Im just worried about the fumes for a few days. Anyone have any input, or if you have done it, how does it work for you?

I was going to do it, but decided not just because I didn't want the black to tuen my cab into more of an oven w/out AC :D I'm just leaving it a bare floor, I hope to strike a deal and get it Rhino Lined, until then, it'll stay as is.

I was thinking about doing that to mine. My buddy did it to his Early Bronco and I liked it but I didn't like how it left our footprints everywhere. Do you have that problem? I actually have vinyl which I love because I can vacuum it, wipe it, or even spray it for a second to get it clean.

Well, I tubed my firewall for clearance and seam sealed everything, then undercoated it with the cheaps stuff from Wally World...It got scuffed up alread just from re-installing the dash and heater goodies. I got what I paid for I guess. $5 worth of undercoating that will be gone in 3 months at this rate.
I'll just toss my rubber mats in there and call it good.

i used zep rubberized undercoating in the cab of my 82, went on without a hitch and looks good, its even quieter on freeway than the carpet, had to deal with heavy fumes for about a week or so but now its gone...its gets a little soft when trany heats up (not sticky or runny..just soft) other than that its been working just fine... i'll post a follow up somtime in mid summer when it gets really hot

I did it guys...and it looks great. at first it rubbed off, but I think it was because I put it on when it was too cold out. Can said 70, I did it in 50 deg. weather(I was a bit anxious). It took a bit to dry, but it looks really good and doesnt scrape off very easy, it takes some jabbing to scrape it (like when I put the seats back in...ouch). It really makes it look a helluva lot better and its quieter in the cab now.

does that under coating keep out vibration and heat from all the stuff under your truck

yes, it deadens all sounds, its alot quieter in the cab on the freeway... as for heat I'd say its about the same

i just used some tractor paint. i can't think of what it is called right now. i ripped out the carpet and brushed it on. its made by Van Sickle, it has a rust arrestor in it as well. i plan on doing the brush on truck liner latter. my carpet was disgusting my clutch had been leaking for over a year. all the paint pealed off and it was starting to rust.
I ended up using rustoleum bed liner. It came out great, though wasent a thick as I wanted, and in the spots I laid it in thick, it cracked. If i had followed the directions it would have turned out perfect. Most def worth every penny. Paid $25 for the gallon kit.

I did it with the dupont roll on 50 bucks a gallon and another 10 for the brush kit. Well worth it, did all the front for my 4runner and have almost half the can left. I did 4 coats as well, should have waited a long time longer before I put stuf back together though, my mats sunk into the coating overnight......needs one more coat now.

The plastic was falling apart in the back of my '84 extra cab and needed to do something with it. Bought a can of spray on bedliner to paint the exposed areas when I peeled the plastic off. Worked great, smelled bad for a few days while the solvents gassed off. Will have to try it on the floors next. The stuff should be as tough or tougher then undercoat.

I had that stuff peel up on me really fast. Expecally when I hit it with the pressure washer.

I just put the roll on bedliner in my 84 truggy. It looks good and hides the tube welds. I also bolted in ruber floor mats so that my feet dont rub the bedliner off. I also used it on my dash. which worked out real good. I took a dia grinder to all the plastic to get all of the oils off of it so that the paint would stick good. and with the roller that comes with the kit it turned out nice. Right know herciliners is having a sale on there roll on kit. I bought my kit for $79 and it came with a $20 rebat

Little OT for the subject but I use Van Sickle paints a lot on fabrication projects and am real pleased with the results. They have a hardener that sells around here for around $10 a pint that is well worth the added trouble and expense. The stuff is inexpensive, easy to workk with and pretty darned tough.

That is exactly what I want to do, where did you get the Rustoleum stuff, and aprox. how much was it if you don't mind me asking? I plan on laying my carpet back down too, and then just removing it for trail use.

Any Hardware store should have it. I actually got my spray on stuff at Fred Meyer's. Home Depot, Lowe's, they should have some of the same stuff. Auto parts places sometimes have some roll on stuff. I know Parts Plus had some Hurculiner on sale for like 50.00 a gallon bucket, that was a while back though. Its cheap and easy and its a good mod.

I got the rustoleum on clearence for $62 for 2 gallons shipped. I cant seem to find it that cheap anymore, but $50 shipped is what it seems to go for on ebay.

When I had my vintage bronco I sprayed the entire car:inside, body and undercarage with bed liner. I sprayed the primer on first. The truck looked great for the 3 years that I owned it. Never had any problems with it, just usual trail scuffs. As for the sun/heat issue I used the cream colored bedliner and it wasn't any hotter than before. Now I am going to spray my 82 toy this summer. Paint is a pain in the ass, go with liner.

I put Durabak light grey roll on bed liner in the tub oif my 1972 FJ40 in 2001 and have had no problems, I have ahuled scraped and scuffed at the stuff and it hasn't budged, it is fading some with the top off though. Be careful though, it will hide your nuckles if you slip a wrench near it.......I can attach photo's if anyone is interested....
