i am starting another project. an 82 reg cab 4x4. i want to change the front leafs right away. i am wondering if i go with a 5" leaf if i need to change more things than a 3" leaf. i know i have to change shocks and brake lines as well as u-bolt flip kit but do i need to do highsteer? i can't afford it yet and i want to run a 35" tire for sure. maybe 36. do nissan 240 brake lines work up front? i would probably be running without highsteer for a few months atleast. will it be ok or do i have to go highsteer. if i run 3" leafs instead will it work better. do you think 3" leafs will clear 35's with room to flex? thanks

With 5" of suspension lift you really need x-over steering.
Nissan 300ZX brake lines work, don't know if 240Z will.
3" and 35's will rub sitting still.

Ok, a slight exaggeration, but they will rub a lot when turning or flexing.

thanks. with 5" lift do i need to lengthen my front drive shaft? can you explain why i need x-over steering. is it something to do with the draglink or pitman?

The stock steering is not designed to work at the angles created by that much lift. Even if you used a dropped Drag Link it would be flakey (and I don't think you can even get a dropped DL over 3"). Plus with x-over you can eliminate the Torque Rod, so you don't have to get an adjustable TR.

Besides, the stock push-pull steering is lousy to begin with.

Yes you will need to lengthen your front driveshaft as well.

Your DS should be good at 3", you can get a 3" dropped DL for the steering, and an adjustable torque rod.

ou may have some rubbing, hard to predict for sure.

who sells the drop dl and torque rod. is that cheap? might as well save up for highsteer i think. thanks

Check the suspension companies like Rancho, Skyjacker, etc, and Downey Offroad and NorthWest OffRoad. They should all have the DL, but not all may have the TR. I think 4Crawler may also have the adjustable TR.
My guess would be around $60-70 each.

BTW, a good lift should also include degree shims to correct driveline angle F & R.
