I need help identifying a part on my 94 22RE. The part is located under the oil filter and I can't seem to ID the part. I think it maybe a sensor (temp?) I need to know as I have a mysterious oil leak in the area and it appears it maybe coming from around the part. Any help would be great.

I think I may have figured it out. Is it the oil pressure sensor?

Yup it is the oil sending unit. Tells your oil pressure gauge how much pressure there is, or tells your idiot light when to come on.

If it was installed without thread lock (the engine has been rebuilt and I've had to fix some other problems such as loose bolts on the exhaust manifold etc. afterward) would this be a possible leak spot? And do I need to drain the oil in order to take it out and apply the thread lock?

Yes that could be a possible leak spot. I would drain the oil before taking it out. I don't know how much if any would drain out, but making oil messes sucks.

Just tighten it up, I wouldn't use threadlock on a sender unless an aftermarket manufacturer said so. If you're deadset on using threadlock use blue so you can get it out later if you have to.

I would put some teflon tape on the threads if it is leaking.

I'd not use thread lock as it isn't a thread sealer. X2 on teflon tape though or teflon thread paste. AAlso I'd not bother draining the oil as most of the oil will be in the pan or the filter. I would keep a couple rags close to wipe up a dribble though.

IT hardly leaked oil when I did my SR5 cluster swap, and I didn't use teflon, OR threadlock, the factory one didn't have it so I don't need it, hasn't leaked, just dont break it tightening it, or under tighten it.
