View Full Version : loss of power at high RPM's, plugged cat!

out of gear it seems to rev ok but under load it won't rev high, even in second gear i can't max it out(don't know what rpms though since i have no tach). engine runs smoothly, no sputtering. slight exhaust leak and in early may on the way back from Moab my exhaust manifold was glowing (in the pitch black). no check engine light.

Question is this: how to accurately tell if my cat is plugged?

1. check vacuum on the intake manifold (should be 18-20" of vacuum if cat is not plugged)

2. use infrared temp thermometer to check before and after temps on the cat (after should be higher unless cat doesn't work or is plugged).

3. Anything else?

HAHA!--I guess it helps to make sure the cold air pipe from the air filter housing to the grill is not kinked in half (must have happened when i put the new alternator in...).

This doesn't negate the fact that the manifold DID glow before i even swapped out the alternator.

Step 1: Cut out cat
Step 2: Measure distance between remaining pipes
Step 3: Go to Autozone
Step 4: Buy Pipe and two clamps of correct size, also some high temp RTV
Step 5: Replace, and forget about it...

Step 6: figure out how to legally sell the cat on Ebay...
Step 7: check to make sure the ignition timing isn't so retarded that the fuel is getting burned in the exhaust manifold.
