Anyone know of a site that shows the differences's between Toyotas LSD's and open diff's? (looking for photos) I picked up two 4.56 3rd's out of early 90's 4runners and Im pretty sure they are open and have the axle codes of G254 which is open but I just what to compare them since I can't look inside them. They are the V6 turbo diff's and Im quite sure its just a 4 spider diff that’s closed up but some (yay hoo) on e-bay is listing the same thing as a LSD so now i want to check it. Also info on how much to have a trutrac installed. I would do it myself but I don't have the tools to do it right, and I have only done the lunchbox locker before so this is above my skill's. Thanks guy's.

Tru Trac's are actually very easy to install. I have one in the front of my rig and I am very pleased with it so far. It actually works pretty well for a limited slip. To install it once you get the third member out you take the carrier out, four bolts the bearing caps need to go back the same way you took them off. You also have to remove the locking tabs from the bearing caps. Unbolt your ring gear and bolt it to the tru trac. You need to either take your old carrier bearings off and put them on the tru trac or put on new carrier bearings. You might as well put on new ones while you are there. Then you put it in and tighten the bearing cap bolts. Then you need to set your backlash. Once you get the backlash set you put the locking tabs back on.
I still have my old open carrier in case I break the tru trac or decide to put a lunch box locker in the front down the road.

Both 3rd's are just sitting on the floor right now so it would be ideal to do a front and rear tru trac before I do the install, but I have been looking at it, and it looks like there are some pretty exact measurements to make on the install. Other question is when I look at Eaton's site it list a different tru trac for the V6 then the 4cyl which is for the rear only and im dropping in one of the rears (4.56) in to the front. Doesn’t the tru trac have to be REV for the front 3rd? I want to go with 2 tru trac's because it see's a lot of icy and snowy roads/HWY's. I have done a lot of trails in it with open diff's and it has always done it all, but I just want to crawl slower and take the easily crossed up line rather then the strait vertical hairy line that the toy seem's to love. (Funniest thing The toy does the hard line every time but the easy line that’s all flexy is what stops it.)

22REkid I was looking at that site earlier and it's a great site but it didn't show me the diff between the toyota LSD and the Open. Yet after reading that site I did figure that theres no way that I have an LSD in my early 90's 3rd's, which is what I thought all along, prior to seeing that post on e-bay.
Is it really all that simple to install the tru trac, Just pull the old out and move the ring gear on to the tru trac and that's it, aside from the backlash(no ideas of what this is).
Anyone know the going rate on the install from a shop? (the $$$$$$ issue maybe, what say's if I do this or someone eles that knows what their doing does it.)

Tru Tracs are different for front and rear. You can use a rear one in the front but it won't work as well. You could probably save some money if you took the third member to a shop and had them installed the tru trac then installed the third yourself.

Yeah that’s what I was going to do since the install is not to bad. I am not looking forward to the front since I just did the knuckle rebuild two months ago. I really wish I had waited before doing it so that I could have knocked them both out at the same time.
Question: I plan to run the rear 3rd out of the runner up front, now I know that you can do this and I know how to do it (easy) but I do question how long a rear 3rd can hold up in the front, does anyone have some input on this?

I did the opposite of you, I put in the Tru Trac, then rebuilt my knuckles a couple months later. I was kicking myself for not doing them both at the same time as well.

That is good to know. I had no idea you could change them around to make a front work in the rear and vise versa.
