Just finished replacing the fuel filter and all I have to say is HOLLY CRAP. What the hell was Toyota smoking when they decided where to put the fuel filter. That was just lovely to change and I have a solid axle I can't even imagine how hard it would be to change that it if you had IFS. I had high hopes of changing her out in an hour or just a little more, but by the time I was done with that thing I was pleading with the truck. Honestly I was talking to a truck in the hopes that it could help me and just work/go back together. I attacked it from the bottom and removed the starter in order to get at it and even with out a starter in the way that SOB was unreal. for what I can figure you can pull the starter the tranny the fuel injection the motor or the fender off in order to get to that sucker.

( 1985 EFI 22RE SR5 pickup. 5 speed Manual)
Here’s the best part I changed it because I have been noticing a loss of power that comes and goes. I was thinking that it was the filter because it feels like something is getting clogged and the power is gone. when it releases I can feel it as well, no matter what speed or gear im in. It's like a jerky feeling that usually happens once the truck has warmed up and is running at a consistent speed. I was thinking that is was a clogged 23 yr old fuel filter but that didn't seem to help. (that bad boy was clogged and nasty). Here's the next part the motor has 1,500 miles on it (yes its new) and I was wondering if I have to adjust the valves already? I don't hear them making noise unless I do the screwdriver to the ear trick and then you can hear them but they sound good. To make matters even harder the exhaust just committed suicide. could it be that my problem stems from the exhaust/ possibly a clogged cat, or my next crazy-ass guess is the damn fuel pump. which I have heard it in a wonderful location and I can wait to mess with that. I am having one hell of a time narrowing this thing down and I now feel like I have so many possible's that im becoming frustrated with this. Oh did I mention that I can hear a whistle noise from up in the front on the same side as the header. sounds like a pulley is not happy. I can't quite find it though ( lost the hearing on my right while in Iraq so I have one hell of a time pin pointing sound.) I could almost swear that it is not a pulley almost sounds like it's coming from the front, bottom of the head? (bad gassket?) then again the sound could be bouncing off the fan then up to the open hood and then back down and it really is a pulley. I don't know man this is weird and the best part is that it all came togather at the same time, please if you have an idea or better yet have deal't with something like it before, PLEASE what is it? PLEASE!!!!!!!

Do you have an open element airfilter?

I know you hate bodylifts but they make getting to the filter, the top two bolts on the bellhousing, and the starter easier so I love them.

With the bogging surge thing it could be the cat but I would look at the EGR and vac lines first.

I drained the oil, checked the headbolts, and checked the valves after cam break in and then repeated at 500 miles but I'm kinda anal retentive. It wouldn't hurt and atleast you could look at your lobes and make sure everything is cool.

no open element air filter just a k&n in the factory box.

I was thinking about that whole BL thing and if it would have made that job easier. I don't like them because they become a weak point but I have been known to run a 1" BL some times.

Both of you said cat so Im going to pull it today. I don't have a new one to swap out so can it be cleaned?

I will check the EGR after that if it is still not right. The vac line all look good but I could pull them each and make sure they don't have a clog.

jedisdead thanks for the invite but isn’t springville along ways from slc? I do appreciate it though.

The only way I know of to clean them is to knock all that lava rock looking crap out making it hollow.

I ran one like that for years just in case they started doing visual inspections.

well that maybe the answer for now. I was just reading about it and the old motor burned oil like crazy so I think that it clogged it up and now with the new motor it shows. I say this because I felt this jerky thing before with the old motor in so what ever it is, it wasn't changed with the new motor.

I did pull the O2 sensor Sunday and noticed small droplets of water (I think) on it and inside the pipe was fairly wet. I am running a fuel additive so im hoping that it's just that. No oil in the coolant and pulled the dip stick and looked for traces of coolant and found nothing.

Get a piece of fuel line and use it as a stethoscope......works pretty good. There's a removable sheetmetal panel on the passenger side inner fender (just behind the shock tower), it's held on by a couple of bolts and a couple of those plastic push pins, remove that to gain easier access (a little easier, anyway:eek:) to the fuel filter......I think that's what Toyota put it there for:grin:--------Hans

You know I thought there was a way to get at it that way but when I looked at that fender it looked like it was all one piece. I want to use the header as a stethoscope, I have been researching this whole clogged cat thing and for what I have read so far its right in line with what I have been experiencing. I hope that it can hold out tell the new cat comes in other wise I will have to gut a cat.

i has similer problems and i thought it might have been my cat and i no if the cat is clogged then wont the headers or the pipes be glowing at night cuz they are so hot? i replaced the tps the filter and the fuel pump. and it wasa just the fuel pump going out. so test that too.

Turned out to be a clogged/busted cat and a broken fuel injector wire.
