i am building my front axle and dont know how good the dana 44 convo is compaired to the longfields. the longfields cost more but are they worth it? i am looking to run 35's locked with 4.56 gears in a front 8" how long will the stock axles hold?

The stock birfs will hold up under a lot of stuff. Most times one will go when the front end is bound up, wheels turned and you're getting on it. Things like that.

I wheeled mine pretty hard for several years before I got my Longs.

your ok with that gear ratio you would be ok with stock birfs. you might want to go to a 5.29 gear with 35"-up tires, then i would reccomend longs. i broke a birf one time with 5.29s and 35's but it was because i was really hammering on it at full lock with an open differential. honestly i have seen that with a locker up front you will be less likley to break birfs because you dont have to hammer on it as hard to climb. with an open diff one wheel will spin while the other wheel catches and it will alternate back and forth and can get violent if you give it gas. when the wheel thats slipping suddenly catches it will snap the star inside the bell or grenade the birf alot easier than if your steadily applying torque , with a locker thats easier to do becuse you wont break traction as easy.

so i wont have to worry about blowing one out right away, and should hold up for some time. would it be worth it to get some um-05's from marlin for 80 bucks a side they would prob last a while right? says they are a little stronger.

i used to wheel the crap out of my rig with stock birfs. they will last as long as YOU let them. the main thing you need to know is , be carefull when in 4 low at full lock in either direction. if you feel it break traction try to straighten it up to about 1/2 way and you can get away with alot more skinny pedal. marlins birfs would be a good spare but if you get 30 spline longs you would not be able to use marlns birfs with a longfield inner axle because the stock inners are 27 spline but with 30 spliners you wont need a spare.
