I drained my manual tranny on a 85 runner to realize the fill plug is stripped and now I cant re fill it. Any ideas on how in the world to get it out. The head is in very bad shape since I have been beating on it for a week. I have tried to heat it,vice grips, smaller sockets and tried to beat them on. This thing is really stuck and to make it harder I have about 3 inches of space to work with since the exhaust is in the way. help

Take the exhaust off so it isn't in the way anymore. I know you already used vice grips but I would use the biggest set you can find and make them as tight as you can and hit the vice grips with a big hammer.
if its a steel plug just weld a nut on it. I had to do this to my Oil pan because some **************************** at Grease Monkey stripped it.

x2 on welding a nut on it. use the biggest nut that you can work with. worked with a stripped starter bolt

I have tried to heat it............ If you're heating the plug it'll just get tighter. You need to heat the area around the plug (the trans). Try clamping a big set of vice grips to plug (they'll act like a heat sink and draw the heat out of the plug) and heat the area around the plug then, using a water soaked rag, grab the vice grips and try loosening the plug.....The idea is to expand the area around the plug (heat) while keeping the plug cool (to keep it from expanding)------------Hans

if you weld a nut to the bolt, when it cools it will be looser as well as have nice flats and corners that you can put a 6 point socket on. hold a large nut over the bolt and fill in the hole. i've successfully removed many broken bolts this way (seized - they broke while trying to remove them). alternatively, taper the end on a large bolt and weld around the perimeter this is easier to hold in place in tight spots or upsidedown.
