went to the pipeline in my back yard.. was just gonna get a lil mud on the tires.. but instead my shifter poped out of 4wd into 2wd,,, so my back end just sunk down.. then went on from there.. what could cause my 4x4 shifter to pop out of low4 into hi2 and out of hi4 into neutral??

i've heard where other guys have had shifter clearance problems w/ body lift. fixed by trimming the shifter hole. however think it was the transmission shifter. i'd pull the boot and go for a little drive. also check condition of motor and trans mounts

It seems when you shift your tranny gears it bumps the shifter knob on the tcase because it's pushed closer(depending on year and case) and makes it bump out of gear.

I had a friend give up 1st place to a S10 in a mudbogg event when we were about 17 because when he shifted from 2nd to 1st(I was filming in the truck) he knocked his transfercase out of gear. Back then at our boggs they used to classify trucks into 4 and 6 cylinder with unlimited tires and then you could enter into the tire size class which went stock -33", 34"-36", 38"-40" and the 44" monster truck class.

We took the knob off of his tcase and he won the 34"-36 class and posted 3rd in the 38"-40" class with 36" swampers and that's before anybody knew about lockers and Fourwheeler magazine used to show us Lime Green showtrucks hauling colormatched boats to some lake.

Sorry about the long and offtopic post but your problem took me back in time when things were easy.

Oh yeah, yank the shifter knob on the tcase or cut the floorpan like somebody allready suggested.

I hate body lift...My 87 I bought back in 96 (Don't have that one anymore) had a 3 inch body lift and I had it removed because I got tired of buying shifter boots at 50 bucks a pop every couple of months because putting it in reverse tore them...It had the floor cut out around both shifters...I bought 2 of them (Boots) and said screw this and just had it removed and went from 33x12.50 tires to 30x9.50 tires and still went in the same places I wheeled before...
I Drove it for 3 1/2 more years on one boot;}LOL My other friends who have toyota's won't even take the old body lift for free...They agree with me...I've had the old body lift since 96 and there still sitting in a box...
Suspension lifts RULE! Body lift SUCK!

forget body lifts... theyre either for show (stupid) or for a little bit more wheel clearance...
pay the extra and get the goof stuff... sus.

but as for ur problem... do what the other guys said.. they got u the advice before i could

it could be something as simple as a detent spring is worn in your transfer case. unless you know for sure that with the body lift your shifter is making contact with the floor.

does your truck shift hard or is it really soft with the t-case shifter when you throw it into 4wd?

i run a 2 inch body lift because i can clear 33x12.5's with a minor trim and it makes workin on things a whole hell of alot easier.

its easy going in 4wd but sometimes it is hard to get it back into 2wd.. gotta pull up and back up like 10 feet and try again and it works...

Mine is sometimes hard to get back into 2WD as well. Sometimes my transmission shifter knocks the t-case from Low into nuetral as well.

yah alot of brands are that way when the drive line binds. if you turn the steering and pull up and back just acouple feet it should also clear.

I used to have the same problem, I removed the bench, got comfy buckets from a prelude (power) and switched my tcase shifter around 180*.
