I have a complete running 100% functional 85 4x4. But I read somewhere that 86 and newer have some parts I could use to make my truck work better?

Well obvisiously I'll swap all the EFI stuff over. But I also read that the rear-ends from the newer ones are wider and if I ever get real "flexy" suspension Ill need it so my tires wont rub on the frame. Also heard something about the IFS steering boxes being better for climbing and such?

The only reason I ask is because I stubbled upon a friend whos roomate was going to sell me his 87 for $400 it just needed the rear cross support bar replaced because it rotted out. So I thought well 400 for a running truck is good even if its IFS....that was sunday....as of today...monday it doesnt run now and right before it died it started to knock really bad so now $200 is the price and instead of fixing it I just want to part it out to make my truck look and work better on and off the road.

sorry for the book Im just new to the 4x4 side of toyotas....thanks in advance!!!

You pretty much nailed it. The EFI stuff is desirable. The IFS rear ends are 3 inches wider, have bigger brakes, and bigger axle tubes. The IFS steering box is what you need for crossover steering.

$200 is a good deal, you can take what you want and part out the rest and get your $200 back.

I'd pull the trans and t-case from the '86 as well. EFI trucks used the stronger W56 trans and you'd need the top shift t-case to put it into your carbureted '85 (your '85's trans should be a G52 with a forward shifting t-case). You might want to take the front hubs (not the lockouts) as well, you'll need them to widen your front track ( http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/axle_differential.htm look under the solid axle widening kit) to match the wider rear (or you could use spacers)--------Hans

and as far as the EFI swap goes will all the EFI and everything go on w/o having to swap heads? and if I switch the tranny and Tcase is it pretty much direct swap?

thanks again!!

The box and hoses, plus an aftermarket cross-over steering kit from any of the vendors.

You may have to drill and tap the block for the EFI's knock sensor.

The EFI tranny is stronger, and it and the t-case should bolt right in.

Or you could keep the current tranny and case and use the top shift case from the EFI truck for a dual case setup.
