View Full Version : An average build (hahaha)

I'm thinking a full-width 60 & 70, a SBC, 700R4/203/205, 4-link rear, and some fuzzy dice for the rear view mirror. The guy I bought this from pulled all his running gear out, and took his dice too. It is an 85.

I want to do bring a higher standard to this build than I have to others in the past. Anybody have any little tricks they would like to share?

I plan to keep my 83 pretty small. I have a friend with a Samurai that looks almost stock. Low amount of lift but is locked, t-case gears etc... He goes where ever the hell he wants to go. He just drives by as other people can't make it and smiles because he kept it small and it works.

My wish list:

2-3" lift
lockers front and rear
4.7:1 t-case gears
high clearance cross member
bobbed bed/flat bed
cross-over steering
differential armor
longfields

Here is a pic now, pretty much stock. This was at the circle track races a couple weeks ago with the club.

The wifes truck is similar to what you have. Its an 82, 4.37 gears, locked in the rear, sitting on 35" MTRs, 22r out of an 83 celica, bobbeb rear with flatdeck, and as soon as she figures out how to install it, dual cases.

I love these trucks, and always will, but after wheeling them in the stock form, I decided to improve on it. My last built Toy, a 93, proved itself to be very capable running this gear I have listed, but as I said, I want to do a much better job this time.

Tube work in the rear is ..... unique.

I would throw another bar across the taillight section so you dont get pulled over on the way home with busted tail lights.

For your rear links i would run 2' x .500 wall with Rubiconexpress joints. Bent bottom links is an easy way to ruin your day.

For your top links you might want to have an adjustable frame mount. It allows you to play with the antisquat.

Did you plan on using airshocks, coils or coilovers?

Nice start though.

I'm not a 100% sold on the idea yet, but the rear tube work and box are more than likely coming off and going onto another project. I'm looking at building something very close to what Cory Hansen ran at this past TTC, minus the mogs. I'll tube and link the rear, run coilovers, and find out what does and doesn't work. I've got another Toy now, a 95, and it will get the big build next winter.

After this truck is built, I'll be competing against Cory at events up here in the same class a fair bit, so I'll be able to watch his truck closely.

As for the joints, I am running 1 1/2" Evolution Machines rebuildable units. Nobody, no where makes them better. Currie, RE, nobody. Don't get me wrong. I'm not promoting them. The guy that owns the outfit is an arogant ass, but I don't need to deal with him to put his product under my truck.

Didnt Cory sell his rig?

No he hasn't sold it. He has another build underway, but the Toy is still his for now.

That is the Top Truck Challenge Toyota correct?

Yup, the one and only. Still got the Mog axles, but these are not the ones that cratered in the tank trap. He replaced them.

Well, I spent this weekend in the shop, and got the axles under my rig. This is something I will never do by myself again, rules or no rules. A Toy 8", no problem, but a fullwidth Dana 60 and 70 make for a pretty good work out. But I got it done, and it looks pretty good as far as I'm concerned. Heres a pic.

yeah that would be a hell of a work out! i had trouble doin my toy front, axles are freakin heavy, i can only imagine the 60/70's. i admire your rig though!

Sweet Looks good. See it's only a work out because you aren't used to it. I've built like 5 rigs and moved axles out and back under for measurement and this a that. It's like second nature now haha. Hey tater what happened to that other site. its not loading. Also what size tires you running? it looks like it sits a little back low

That sky's kit makes it pretty easy as far as lining up everything and making everything ready to weld up

mwm - Thanks for the compliment. It feels good when someone says the admire me. Now get out from under my desk! :redspotda

LLips - The front is actually to high. I have a set of rear toys from an 80 in there, and they are about 2.5 to 3" to short, but I can move it around. For the most part, everything is just tack welded in, so I can move it for final tuning.

Any idea what a guy can use for the front? With the Sky kit moved ahead 1.5", these springs won't work, and the 2nd gen's are too long. I also had to turn the rears around to keep a decent pinion angle, and that moved the axle closer to the firewall.

With two guys that weigh close to 600lbs together sittng on the front, the truck dropped almost 4", but was still a little high up front. So between the engine, and the winch, I don't need to drop them to much.

As for the site, the server crashed, what a week ago, and they are in stage 4 of a stage 5 repair. Should be back online soon. I have all the build pics, and want to post them up, but on my site, first anyways. Might be putting together another site, as I don't like the format of mine, but we will see.

the toy rears are too short? How about maybe some cherokee leafs. I bealieve they are like 50" long. I can't remember about the pin length. you could check that would. My bro is running the same springs. He ended up adding a 2" block to the back.

Cherokee, eh? What years? And are they front or rears?

They are the rears. I think any year. they are all the same. From my knowledge they haven't changed any.

I guess you can tell I'm a j**p fan by the vast amount of knowledge I retain when it comes to those POS, eh?

Thanks for the info. I'll try tracking down a set.

Yeah I'm not so knowledgable about jeeps and stuff either. I was just measuring springs one day and just came across one. I'm not a jeep fan either. Jeeps are for cheerleaders.

sorry, i didn't catch what srings you are using, but i use stock 7 leaf waggy's. i did one rig with rodeo rears on the front. it seemed to work well for him. just another thought to check-out.

Well, I'm almost as bad as the wife when it comes to making up my mind about something. I have ordered, and put together two doublers in the past little while. After partially installing them into the truck, I decided to go with a different one.

So here is my final choice. A Canadian company by the name of NorthWestFab has a doubler on the market, and this unit is awesome. I ordered one, along with a triplestick shifter. With the clockability, I'll be able to keep the belly flat, and won't need to cut out any of the floor to do it.

Just to clarify, this is the 203/205 setup.

Lizard Lips

you'll have to tell me how that setup works. i've been thinking about getting that for my truck. what other adapter did you get? you wanna sell it

1tontoy

Ran ord's and another unit. Sold each to finance the next.

Got good news. I got Hillbilly Offroad back up. Lost all the info, and its a new server, but we still exist.

I don't want to sound like I'm pimpin them, but if you are gettin a doubler for a gm drivetrain, go with NorthWestFab. You will never run another.

Lizard Lips
03-26-2007, 09:02 AM
I got the gm drivetrain in my green truck. I think I'll probably end up going with them for the adapter. My other truck I'm building I'll be trying something different. Going with a 4.3-th350 and toy cases and see what happens

You're gonna get a kick out of this. I scrapped the 383. Oh, and the tranny also.

I had a 302 out of a 91 Mustang land in my lap. Its been stroked to a 332, and on the dyno, puts out 420fpt, and 395 ponies. Its comin with a built C6 tranny, which bolts right up to the Ford 203 I am using in my doubler setup already.

Needless to say, I am pretty happy about the whole deal. Chevy, Ford, even Mopar power, it doesn't really matter to me, as long as it has the umph to turn my tires, I'll run it.

Just a run of the mill TH350. I have the new 3.06 planetary to go into it on the rebuild, and the stage II shifter, but other than that, its just a plain jane TH350. Also have a 700R4 from a previous build.

Time for a bit of an update I guess. I am lazy, so I have't got a whole lot done, but I think you guys might like the pics. I did manage to find some new springs (James Duff Ford Ranger rears), but they are not installed here. The front axle will be relocated approx 4 inches forward.

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p87/1tontoy/D1000058.jpg

According to the formula, this shot nets me a 1060 score on a 20 degree RTI ramp. That is with stock Toy rears up front, which are almost 4" too short, and really stiff. I am sure it would be more, but that is as high as the hoist would go. I am really looking forward to doing the same with the new springs, and a forklift.

40's, front and rear, both on 15" wheels.

Figured I could update this.

Forget all the previous posts. Whatever I thought I was doing then is now done and gone. There is a new build in the works, and I once again have nearly all the parts together.

I am going with a set of Ouverson built Rockwells, a TH350 mated to a 203/205 combo, tubing the rear, running a 4 link front, and toying with the idea of a transverse 1 link rear. But it also could very well be a 4 link set up also. 3" Kings on all 4 corners, with a tubed rearend, and 47" LTB's.

As for the powerplant, I decided that I may as well go all out, and I found myself a rather peppy 454 big block. It sports a Holley TBI Fuel Injection system, along with a serpentine pulley system, hi output alt, and a snappy mini starter. Power is in the neighborhood of 4-450, and the torque is over 500 ft/lbs.

Have a few things left to pick up for it, but assembly should start pretty soon. I'm getting tired of looking at it sitting there, and wheeling the little Toy.
