My timing chain was slapping so I parked it for a while then got to tearing it down and nothing appeared wrong. I figured maybe it stretched or something so I bought a new one that was way short and no way I could get it on even with guides and tensioner off. Is there diff chains for diff years? This is on an 87 but the 22re is a few years older I think but Im not sure.

The chains from the 81-84 are different than 85-95. What year is the 22re? Could it possibly be an 84 with EFI and a double row timing chain?

He is right 81 to 84 take diff. chains ! I think the double row was only in the very first 22r's like the 81 and 82 so If it don't have a dual row chain it still can be the early 22r 83 or 84 ...

I'm about 90% sure that 84 was a double row. I believe 85 was the first year of the single row and EFI in 4x4's. They had 22RE's in Celicas in the early 80's and the 81-84 had a shorter block and a taller head and in 85 the blocks and heads were different because the block was taller and the head shorter. You might have a early (83) Celica 22RE engine which are pretty rare. Where did you get the engine?

Im pretty sure its from a celica actually, I got it from a guy that worked at a junkyard(didnt actually get it from the junkyard) and he wasnt sure what it came out of.
So Im thinkin older celica 22re with a longer chain than '87 22re, what time frame should I try then? Thanks

I would probably choose an 83 Celica with a 22RE which I believe is the GTS model.
