View Full Version : smokey startup

Heres my problem:
When I start up my truck in the mornings, or anytime for that matter (after its been sitting for a few hours) it smokes like a kettle for 3-5 minutes, then goes mostly away. This has pretty much always been the case (the smoke)
A few weeks ago, before i put in a new t-chain, it would sputter for no reason at crusing speeds, first reaction, bad fuel filter: replaced. Now I thought it could be the t-chain slack or somethin. (the hesitation/sputter), but it still does it.
Now, more recently, the smoke has slightly increased on startup and im burning very little, but some oil. (tops 1/2 quart a week, 250+miles). And the sputter is not so prevailant now.
I was thinking it could be a sticky valve (the sputter) and the burning oil/smoke was from a worn valve guide, being that the sputter is almost completly gone now, but the smoke has increased. I.E. bent valve caused the sticking and the bend wore out the guide, causing some oil to "leak down". and the accumulating "leak down oil" was sittin on the piston till startup and burning off, but still leaking ever so slightly at running speeds, continuing to burn off the oil. This would explain my sputter and my oil consumption. Am I on the right track here? I guess my first check should be the plugs to look for symptoms. What should I look for on the plugs?
If you guys have any other ideas that would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
John

Jeez, you answered your own question! I agree with all except the bent valve theory, guides just wear over time and mileage ---------Hans

change the seal that will get you some time. you can get thicker oil that will help also.

so whats the explination for the sputter? It is not consistant. Are the two not related and have nothing to do with each other? If not whaddya think is causing the sputter? It almost feels like the engine is loosing power, then you punch the throttle, it moves past that spot, i would normally say its the timing and fix that, but it would have to happen every time in that rmp range, or at least most of the time. Going own the highway, Ill be going like 60 or so, and the its like da-da-da-da, punch gas and it smooths out. And if im going up any grade at all it does it even more so, but the same day, i can do the same exact thing in the same exact spot at the same exact speed, and it wont do it. So whaddaya guys think it is?

Sorry, I couldn't be more help---------Hans
