Kinda dreading it...but it pisses oil everywhere, been putting it off for a while. Any suggestions or little tricks to make it easier? Thanks

pretty easy, its on the front of the oil pump, basically, its the same as a t-chain install minus a few steps. I would def. do the t-chain at the same time, save you a whole bunch of pain later on. dont forget the "famed" hidden bolt under the upper cam sprocket mating the head to the block.(no need remove head, just this bolt).
If you know the t-chain is good go for it, remove the lower crank bolt before starting anything else(the breaker bar, starter bump trick did NOT work for me, best way: pull starter, place a prybar in the flywheel) pull pulley off, and any other brackets, you may want to pull the radiator too, just to have some room. other than that the pump slides right off the shaft after all the bolts are removed. Good luck. Paitencie is a virtue.

get the seal with the sleave or you can get a thinner seal same outer and in diameter half the thickness and install two.

woah, come again? that went like WAY over my head. You can use 2 seals? If so, where do they come from? special order? Is this because youll be getting a better seal? I.E. 2 oil lips. Seal w/ sleave? im so confused, could i have installed a better seal? what i used was the main seal from the t-chain kit, looked just like oem.
thanks,
John

main crank pulley gets a groove worn from the seal sitting in the same spot spinning, if you have napa or carquest you can bring your seal in and ask for one half as thick and order two, the offset of the half as thick seal put the seal surface on a different place on the pulley, I don't have 22rs anymore or I could do a part number but I did get a call the other day for a rebuild so I will put doubles in if I get the job and publish the number.

Other option if the crank pulley is worn bad is the ready sleeve kit you can get from kragen or schucks or autozone that has a push on sleeve that goes on the crank pulley. it covers the groove.

Got it all apart...I did way too much because I couldn't determine where the front cap meets the block. Here is a picture of the front cap off with the seal pulled:

Here is a pic of the front of the motor with everything removed:

The seal that I got from Toyota is half the thickness of the one that is on there now. Is that going to cause problems later? Should I put two on?

Wow, It looks like you've got the whole front of the motor torn down. Did you do a timing chain? If not, why did you take so much apart? I would have taken off the balancer, fan, shroud, and thats it. I would definitely recommend getting an oem seal, just like what you pulled off; and one with a sleeve if the balancer is worn. I have never heard of two seals stacked together.

Yeah, the seal I have is from toyota...I think that this might have been done before by a previous owner. The front of the engine was so greasy it was impossible to see what needed to be removed. At least now I have the chance to clean it up & put it back together & hope it doesn't leak.

if you can fit two put in two to make sure it isn't the same groove, use lots of brake cleaner and some wire brushes get all the oil and dirt off. Blue rtv for water, on the oil pump use some rtv around the seal black for oil, lube the inner part of the seal before you put in the balancer. when you get it back together look under the bottom of the head, top of the timing cover for a leak too, that might all be just slung oil.

Since you got the water pump off this maybe a good time to replace it... Make sure the sealing surfaces are VERY clean before you start putting everything back together. Its kind of a bitch but take your time here... If you leave little pieces of the previous gasket behind you could develop leaks later on.
Well done.
Good learning experience ain't it?...

Yeah...the next time will be a lot easier. I have red RTV. will this be okay for the water pump & oil pump?

This is what I bought and had installed before I dropped a used engine in my truck. $152.00 and the whole front is done.

Why just replace one leaky seal and wait for something else to go.
Since you have the whole front assembly off, you might as well replace everything at this price.

Once your done, you know it should be good for a while.

Just a thought.

Wow, that is a good deal, a little too late for me tho.
