View Full Version : 22RE Air/Fuel Mixture
I have an 89' 22RE that is bored .080 over, stroker crank, 94mm forged pistons, LC's efi performer cam, .5mm oversized valves, bigbore TB, header, cone filter, 35lb flywheel, about 10.5 comp ratio, stock injectors, and stock ecu. With the mod sheet out of the way this thing ran super lean (no shit huh) to the point of turning plugs snow white and would ping like hell on Amoco 93 octane. I did the AFM mod at three clicks and yanked the EGR, pinged worse. Bumped the AFM up to 5 clicks and put on a good EGR and could run 89 octane no problem. Just when I thought all my problems were over all hell broke loose. I got gas at some mom and pop station where we hunt (89 is premium there) and you would have thought the motor was coming apart with the pinging. I found some 93 at another station and it got better but not good, now I'm running 93 chevron from town and I'm lean again. I have pics of the plugs but I'm to stupid to post them here something about to big. I've posted pics here before I think but I'm no computer expert. I will get this problem fixed and hopefully help someone else hotrodding a 22re.
And thanks to 22REKID for all the help so far, he knows his stuff.

From Downey's site but, I can't see why you couldn't deal with Jet Performance direct:
COMPUTER “CHIP” PROGRAMMING
HERE’S THE DEAL – Downey sends you shipping instructions and the shipping container with packaging materials. You ship directly to JET via an overnight service (Fed. Ex., UPS-Red, Airborne Exp.), your cost. JET then ships back to you on the same or next day via overnight service, their cost --- Easy Deal!
89600 JET Chip Service Charge $ Call
4 Cylinders = 13-14 H.P. gain
Chip has a lifetime guarantee
V6 Engines = 15-17 H.P. gain

http://www.jetchip.com/ JET Performance Import Computer Upgrade Package
The JET Performance Import Computer Upgrade Package is the solution to performance tuning import and domestic sport compact vehicles. Import computers do not have computer chips that are easily removed, making it necessary for JET engineers to either reprogram the vehicle’s existing chip or remove and replace the chip by desoldering it from the circuit board. The kit provides you with all the materials required to safely send your vehicle computer to JET’s lab for a high performance software upgrade. Once we receive your ECU it will be programmed according to the information you provide on the vehicle specification sheet to optimize performance and mileage to match your specific modifications. JET's exclusive Dynamic Spectrum Tuning provides optimal performance across the entire power band-not just at full throttle. Programming includes extensive modification to air/fuel ratios, ignition advance and boost pressures for turbo applications.
Computers received at JET by 12:00 PM PST will be programmed and reshipped the same day to minimize down time. Next day air return shipping is included in the price of the kit*. For the quickest turnaround time we recommend shipping the ECU to JET via UPS, Fed-Ex or DHL next day air.
Custom Computer Upgrade Packages Include:
- Step by step instructions
- Computer location chart
- Horsepower specification chart
- Custom programming specification form
- Shipping instructions and preaddressed forms
- Shipping carton and packing materials
- Next day air return shipping is included*
- Warranty information
*Next day air included in 48 states only. Call JET for shipping rates to other locations.
*See Import Information section for horsepower gains and dyno charts.

Have you ever used the JET chip? I don't mind spending some money, hell between the straight axle and this motor I've got alot more into it than I paid for the truck. I was thinking of going stand alone but if this will work and cost less I'd jump on it. I'll have to get another ECU to use in my truck until they get it back to me and I just don't want to throw money at something else that doesn't work. Thanks for the input I'll give them a call today.

Jet chips work pretty good but the only real difference between a chiped ECU and a stock ECU is the JET chip will make the injectors stay open for longer preventing lean conditions. That's not so important on a stock motor but on a stroker with high compression it is like putting bigger injectors in it. When you richened up the A/F mixture you are just essentially fooling the computer to put more fuel in there but the injectors will only stay open for as long as they did stock. Richening up the a/f mixture usually works when you finanally get it right but it's pretty much guess work. On a 22RE that modified a stand alone fuel management system is a good investment for the simple fact that it bypasses the MAF or AFM and just about all the stock Toyota sensors. You can dump as much fuel as you want in there with the stand alone. I think a chip would do your truck good but might not fix everything.
I swapped to a colder NGK BPR5EY yesterday but I haven't pulled them yet to look. LC wants between $800-$1200 for stand alone, got another one to look at that you know works? I hate taking stuff off but I might yank the big bore and the cone today just to see what happens. I can get another ECU for $50 to use while they have mine so it looks like the total cost minus shipping is about $450 which is about the same as some of the prices I've seen in post about stand alone fuel management.
I didn't pull the TB or the cone, I just bumped it up to 7 clicks rich and no black smoke. I've got a 104 mile round trip in the morning we'll see what happens. The idle still has an intermittent miss but I don't care. At this point I carry the FSM, a full toolbag, and a tube of silicone anyway.
It's running good today at about 78 deg. and bogging the gears. I'm happy but still not running 89 octane and I haven't pulled the plugs yet maybe in the morning before we go to the hunting club.

I'm suspicious of the JET mod. You can impact injector pulse width (fuel) as well as timing at the ECU, but JET is known for generic modifications.. Unless they spend some time with YOUR truck on the dyno, they're just guessing...
In stock cases, going richer is going to mean less power.. I wonder what motor they do that chip for?
For $350, you can do megasquirt and have full control over your timing and fuel.
The other "hack" is to add a resistor in to the temperature sensor circuit at the ECU. You can tell the ECU that the motor is colder and the ECU will richen it across the board. LC sells this mod for $50, it's just an adjustable resisitor...
Darin this thread was started before I talked to you about Megasquirt but maybe someone else will see it and learn something so thanks anyway.
