Ok I'm tossing the carb and going efi. Is the head on the re different than that of the r? It seems that the manifold of the re efi system does not want to "bolt on" to the R's head... If they are infact different, would putting an RE head on work/fit and do the job?

If the 22R you're trying to convert is an '85 or newer, it should bolt right up. Pre '85 22R/REs are entirely different from the '85 and later motors. Here: http://www.lcengineering.com/TechNotes/TechNote49.htm -----------Hans

That's no good! I have the 84'... Will switching the head with the 22re head work and fix my problem?

If you are asking if the RE head will bolt on to the 84, than the answer is yes but as far as it working with the old 84 block and timing chain than no. The blocks in 84 were different than the 85 and newer as well as the heads. You can't use 85 and newer heads on a pre 85 even though it will bolt on. The timing chain would always be an issue. The best thing to do is get a 85 and newer block and head with the single timing chain and then convert.

Is there any way to get around that? Is it maybe a possibility to machine an adapter to attach the efi to the head? Should I maybe just scrap the idea and go back to carb because I can't afford to do pretty much the whole engine right now...

The changeover date was 8/84, so depending on when your truck was made, it still may be possible. I think LC Engineering has info on how to ID if you have the later 'laser' block or not.

Mine was made in may but I know it's the old one because that is where I am having my problem...

If it were up to me, i would continue to use the carbed 22R until i could find a whole 22RE to use. Better yet find a complete donor truck with a 22RE and swap everything over (this way all the electrical is layed out for you). Its cheaper than you think... Keep an eye open for a wrecked 2 wheel drive pickup er something...

Yeah I've kept that in mind too... For now I think I'll find a good condition 22r wire harness... If you know of one LET ME KNOW! haha Or if it's possible to have an adapter made so it WILL BOLT UP that would be the best.

You might look for an '84 2WD p/u, some had early model 22RE injected motors (I don't know why they didn't offer them in the 4wds) or an earlier, injected, Celica.....also earlier R series motors with injection and compatible with your '84--------Hans

Oh that's awesome! I'll keep an eye out!
