Recently purchased an SR5 cluster for my 1990 pickup. From what I have read, this is a plug in and go thing on 3rd gens. At 1st turn of the key, volt meter and gas register things are cool. The tach is another story. With the key on, it reads 3 grand, and engine will not start with cluster plugged in. Apparently tach is somehow disabling the coil. I am unable to find any help in wiring diagrams online. Any help??

all the pins are in a differenlt location on every one I ever had(sr5 to non sr5), you have to move pins. Also that means the tach is grounding the coil out, you need to find the wiring diagram for the gauge clusters and move the pins to ensure they were in proper place.
Or you pick the wrong tap on the coil to be the input signal.

Where can I find pin outs for the standard and SR5 clusters? Have you done a third gen?

My truck is a 90. Cluster is from a 90 or 91 V6 runner, only years with cable speedo. Thanks for any help

Hey man, could you possibly post the URL to the wiring diagram? I think that I will be needing it also... Somebody else probly will too.... Thanks! If you would rather e-mail it I'd appreciate it greatly, my email is dvst@dtccom.net.

I looked at it your are right about the sr5 tach problem, there is no difference in the pins. I can't get the program to copy paste pics. I would have to scan it. the only wire for the tach on a input is the black one,A7 the terminal will be marked That is suppose to be the siginal from the ingnitor. Sorry it took so long.

So then the fact that it grounds out my coil indicates the tach is broken?

on your fuse block in the engine run a wire from the port marked ING. ot a tach neter or your tach and see if it works

actually if you added a wire to install the tach, it is grounding out the coil all the time. More than likely you have a bad tach, unscrew it from the cluster and see it has any effect.

Aparently that is the case; am I better off trying to have this one repaired or taking my chances with another used one? I just don't want to look like those punk kids that put monster tachs in their lowriders to keep tabs on their 98hp 4 banger.

Its usually is just a capacitor shorted. You know your getting a short between ground and the input signal just trace it out. I put the sr5 cluster in because I didn't want the clutter either.

so i know this is like the oldest thread ever, but i finally got all this to work after not messing with it for 8 months. it turns out that i had a tach that was not in great shape at all. i gave it to a girl i know at school who was an electrical engineering major, and apparently it had been fried beyond repair. also, my truck was indeed not wired for a tach, and an additional wire was needed to operate one. i ended up getting one for $20 that was an electric speedo (much easier to find) and just swapping the tach itself. as for anyone who needs a wiring diagram, it doesn't get much better than this:
