I recently ran into alittle extra money and I thought that it was about time I did something to my truck. Heres my ideas... (1.) get a locker for the rear (2.) get a set of lifted leaf springs for the rear to remove the blocks that are currently there and (3.) have my engine worked on to get rid of the rattling valves and blue smoke. I guess my question is which one of these should I choose? I currently have a 4in lift with im thinkin 3 or 4in blocks in the rear...and this is why I am considering the lifted springs for the rear. The locker would basically be for hairy situations this hunting season...which is right around the corner. And about the valves and blue smoke...i think ive posted this before but ill refresh yalls memories. Valves rattle, blows blue smoke at start up occasionally, and theres no noticable oil leaving the dipstick. These things are what I had in mind to get done within the next month or two bec thats when the weather gets dicy here in the mountains. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would pull the had and get the vavles done, if it doesn't run then all you can do is brag about the locker

If it runs good otherwise,

get the locker

Ya the truck runs good, the only thing it does is smoke OCCASIONALLY. Yall guys get me worried when yall say i need to get the head fixed. From what ive been told around here..as long as its not loosing oil im fine. Anyway so I shouldnt get the springs?? I thought 4in lift blocks were bad??

No need to do the valves yet, sounds like you may just need to adjust the lash on the rocker assembly, and that is no biggie. A little smoke at start up is not that big a deal if you are not losing oil.

However, if that rattling noise is from the timing chain having eaten away the guide and is now cutting into the timing cover that could be a big problem at a bad time. I have worked on 22Rs that people thought the valves needed adjusting and pulled the cover to find a floppy timing chain sawing into the timing cover.

what kind of locker are you thinking about.

you could weld the rear end and get some longer shackles for the springs
and cut the block down to two inches.

then get the motor repaired also.

thats what i would do

but i drive with a spooled rear and dont notice it much.

Well i was thinking about an aussie locker but that was gonna be my next question for you guys since im sure most of you on here has some sort of experience with the diffrent kinds. Which should I look into?? I have to look for the ones that work for 8" v6/4cyl turbo. An aussie for the v6 8" is about $250...right.

Fix the F%$#@ING engine!

All the lockers and springs ain't worth crap if you can't use them. :silly:

Fix the timing chain (that's probably the rattle) and then adjust your valves, which you'll do anyway after replacing the chain. Change your oil and fill it with 2 quarts of lucas oil treatment and three quarts of of sae30 no more smoke.

My truck used to use a quart of oil every 500 miles. Then I started using Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W-50 and STP in the red bottle. I use about a quart every 3000 miles.
