It is a pain in the a$$. Taking off the TB is easy, the problem is getting the bolts off of the lower side of the head. It is extremely difficult to do it when the head is on the car not to mention that there is a long allen head bolt that goes on the front/middle that is a bear to get too and it is difficult to find the right tool for that. IMO I would wait until the head needs to be rebuilt and then do it. It is a lot of work and depending on how dirty it is, it might not be worth it. I would start with pulling the TB off and looking inside the plenum to see how dirty it actually is. I would definantly clean the TB though.

yeah, crusty is the right word for it...
the head only has 50-60k on it, i dont guess that the plenum ever got cleaned. I have been using Lucas (kinda like sea foam) but, its never gonna clean the upper portion. i was thinking it it is a bitc* then maybe cleaning it w/ a rag might help, but im afriad of plugging a hose or something with the crap thats gonna loosen up. So, you thinking its more trouble than its worth?

I think that it CAN be more trouble than it's worth. There is a Sticky thread called "Check out these tech write ups!" and there is a spot where they cleaned the TB and plenum chamber but they neglected to mention how much work is actually involved with taking all that stuff off. How long have you had the truck for? If the head was rebuilt 50-60k ago I don't really see a reason not to clean the plenum chamber. Even with the head off it can be hard to get some of the bolts out and when it is on the vehicle you can multiply that by about 10. As I said earlier, I would definantly take the TB off and clean it, if the vehicle has had regular air filter changes and TB cleanings, than it shouldn't be that dirty.
