I figure a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. I must have said this a thousand times PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE YOUR BIRF AND AXLE ASSEMBLEY IN THE HOUSING. As you can see if you hit the birf with a hammer putting it in the housing the inner axle can go past the snapring groove and bind in the bottom of the birf. The snapring sometimes breaks and falls inside and can cause binding. When the inner axle binds in the bottom of the birf when you turn it puts so much pressure on everything something has to give. As you can see it will even split the ball bearings in half like glass marbles and bust the cage, inner race and strip the splines on the inner shaft. We have even put tack welds for safety stops on the inner shaft. In some cases people have driven the birf on so hard the inner race drove over the tack weld. The snapring groove is in there for a reason . These failures are from improper installation. Of course those were the first couple of hundred made. Weve corrected it now by making the splines shorter so it can only go in to the correct depth. So were asking you guys to be carefull when installing these axles. If they dont go in by hand then something is obviously wrong. The housing could be bent or maybe a little grinding for clearance. Thanks for your help.

Great info, I put the tac on my shafts....what the hell did they use a 20lb hammer to put that birf in? Its almost as bad as the folks who dont put GREASE in there Birfs before installing them!

so wait a second is this from beating the inner axle into the birf or by beating the whole axle shaft into the carrier/axle housing? just to clearify don't want to mess up when i do mine.

YES. The Snap rings are not that strong, and you only have to tap them on to seat them. If you dont think they are seated try to pull the shaft off with your hand. If the shaft comes off you need to tap it a bit harder, if it stays on you in great shap.

beating the whole axle shaft into the carrier/axle housing?

YES. After you have the shaft on the Birf and you are trying to install in, some guys are having to beat the snot out of the new birfs to get them in....most likley a bent housing, thats when you can push the shaft past the clip and into the birf and thats where they are having the problems.....Hope that helps!
