So it started off as irratating and has become a nightmare. Every once in a while when I would turn the key I would get a click, the voltimeter drops, lights dim but no crank, this was one click only. so if you hit the ignition a few times it would start. Then it got worse. After 15 or 20 clicks it would start. turn key click, turn key click. Then worse yet till finally all I get is the click and no payoff.

So here is what I have done. Checked battery and all connections. Replaced the starter and checked all connections. Replaced starter relay, solenoid relay. Replaced ignition switch. I even bypassed the alarm system. I am at the end of my rope. Oh and I should mention that if I roll start it it will start.

This is an 86 runner, 22re, sr5
ANY HELP would be appreciated

When you checked the battery did you check the amps and voltage?

I had a friend that had the exact problem, only it was a Bronco, turns out that the starter was grounding out near the engine, vibration + heat made the cable housing wear away. replaced the cable and no problems, for a while, he eventually had to relocate the wires away from heat and put a wrap on them. weird. check the resistance in your wires, check your voltage. hope this helps. also, definetly put in a new battery, peroid, and have your alternator tested, it may be the culprit in killing your battery, if that is truly the problem.
aloha,

Thanks for all suggestions. Had the battery tested, it is fine and the alternator is new. I don't think it is a problem there. Any more thoughts would be appreciated.

You could put in a push button start. Even if it was temporary until you fixed the problem.
